What do you all think of burying the wire using a yard edger? They only cut 2 or 3" deep, but yard edgers are cheap to buy used.

I have had a PetSafe RadioFence and it worked perfect. Training the dogs is quick (I've trained 3 personal dogs -- a beagle, basset Hound and a dauhsund). I do highly suggest a Stubborn Dog Collar with adjustable settings (referred to in another post as "bigger collar with 9 volt"). The shock has to be strong enough to deter the dog. The dog learns the boundary and thus does not get shocked any further. This fence was on 1 acre in the city and was put in with a gas yard (driveway)edger to maybe 2" deep. I also loaned the edger to several naeighbors to install their fencing. The edger just needs a new blade (for depth) and a tight belt.

My parents currently have 15 acres with an invisible fence on it. Works perfect for their Sharpei/lab mix. Again -- they have the stubborn dog collar. This fence was put in with a subsoiler set to 4" deep.

I have a home being built on 10 acres and plan on fencing 7 of those acres for my Basset Hound and Beagle. I have a PetSafe transmitter but need new collars. I am gonna try the Sams Club Humane Contain fence this time. If it is not satisfactory I'll just hook up the PetSafe one and buy some collars. I'll use a subsoiler set shallow, maybe 4", on this install. Some of the area is wooded and on that area I'll just use the corner of a hoe and recover with dirt and leaves.

I'm a big fan of the fence as a way to contain your dog. It does not protect your dog from other animals but does stop the dog from wondering off. I still will have a smaller real fence for times we are away. When installing shallow is better since the signal can run weaker for the same resulting coverage area. If my memory serves correct PetSafe suggests 1 to 2" deep. I like it 3 to 4" just so my aerator will not punch it.

Its amazing how well some dogs remember. Years ago we trained my black lab with an invisable fence at my best friends house. She has my dogs sister, and we used to let them run in an area about an acre or so close to the house. training was the white flag line. every other day, take down every other flag until they know where the fence was. they ran through it every now and then but overall it worked great but we quit using it after the dogs had grown, Anyway, 4 years later I was walking my lab at a cancer relay for life event, and when they set out the candles in white paper bags, My dog would not cross the white line, she walked right up to it and sat down. I could not figure out what was wrong. I had to drag her accross. 2 days later I saw a yard with the white flags and realised why.

We have a Brittany about 1 yr. old and bought a shock collar from ebay for about $35.00 - We have only had to use the shock feature one time and the vibrate feature a few times at the beginning ..it took about 2 days for our Brittany to get the idea and now we can let him out and when we call him he runs back as fast as he can....it is beautiful to see him run. There is no way we could use an invisible fence since if he ever got through the fence while chasing a squirrle or some other critter he may never come back home and we would not realize what the problem was..we also paid $40.00 to have him microchipped just in case but I highly reccomend the shock collar...I am here to tell you they reallly work with very little effort..

Do not run an aerator over it! Don't ask me how I know. Contained a lazy beagle real well.
