Hunterridge,
I thought about getting some Guinea's but after two of my neighbors bought some there is no way I would have any. The bought either 30 or 60 and split, well tried to split up the flock. The two houses are a good 800 feet from each other so you would see the flock moving from one house to the other throughout the day.
They made what I thought was alot of noise during the day. I don't know what they did at night since I did not live out there then. They where noisy. The neighbor first kept them in his garage which they imprinted on. So he had a garage full of loud full of poop birds. Took him awhile to get the birds out of the garage and clean up the mess. Then they used his front porch.
I'm not sure if he ever built them a coop or not and the flock just seemed to move around. It was not long before the numbers of birds in the flock stared to decrease. The foxes, hawks, owls and the coyotes where having good dinners. I was finding piles of feathers all over my place. After awhile there was just one lone very skittish bird. Then he to joined the rest of the flock....
I think the reason he bought the birds was to go after the ticks. We are in tick heaven. But it seems like if I keep the grass cut and we stay out of the woods during tick season we are ok. If I work near tickville I tuck the pant legs into my socks and either spray with DEET or I treat my clothes with Permithrin. Unless the birds move into the woods they would not really effect the tick population that much and given the amount of land I'm working I don't think I could own enough guineas.
I remember there was a thread on TBN years ago about guineas so there is another thread on here somewhere.
Later,
Dan
