Wifes parents ahve a bunch of gunieas. They are pretty samrt in that they sleep in the trees at night to get away from the coyotes and dogs.
I dont really care for them but they swear by them for pest control.

I guess I will need to find someone local that has them so I can see how much noise they make during the day. It is very quite where we are building and I don't know if I want to change that.

When I was young I raised sliver and golden pheasant but they did not make much if any noise.

They are loud, no doubt about it. Like alot of things, you get used to it. :)
You just got to appreciate them for what they do, eat bugs.

Hunterridge,

I thought about getting some Guinea's but after two of my neighbors bought some there is no way I would have any. The bought either 30 or 60 and split, well tried to split up the flock. The two houses are a good 800 feet from each other so you would see the flock moving from one house to the other throughout the day.

They made what I thought was alot of noise during the day. I don't know what they did at night since I did not live out there then. They where noisy. The neighbor first kept them in his garage which they imprinted on. So he had a garage full of loud full of poop birds. Took him awhile to get the birds out of the garage and clean up the mess. Then they used his front porch.

I'm not sure if he ever built them a coop or not and the flock just seemed to move around. It was not long before the numbers of birds in the flock stared to decrease. The foxes, hawks, owls and the coyotes where having good dinners. I was finding piles of feathers all over my place. After awhile there was just one lone very skittish bird. Then he to joined the rest of the flock....

I think the reason he bought the birds was to go after the ticks. We are in tick heaven. But it seems like if I keep the grass cut and we stay out of the woods during tick season we are ok. If I work near tickville I tuck the pant legs into my socks and either spray with DEET or I treat my clothes with Permithrin. Unless the birds move into the woods they would not really effect the tick population that much and given the amount of land I'm working I don't think I could own enough guineas.

I remember there was a thread on TBN years ago about guineas so there is another thread on here somewhere.

Later,
Dan

I started off with 7 chicks, I wanted them for bug control. The first one escaped the coop before I realized they could fly, it was only about 2 weeks old. The next one died when it went in behind a coop door that wasn't quite all the way open, there was about 4 inches between the door and the wall. The guinea got in there, couldn't figure out how to get out and died. After watching mine I think they have about 1/6 the intelligence of chickens. Four of the rest bought it due to predators. We now have 1 male left and he hangs around with the chickens and pretends to scratch. I'm going to get more this year. I don't mind the noise, but it can be loud. When the guineas were in the barn and would start squalking there was no way to have a conversation until you went outside or less likely waited until the birds quit. They will also eat tomatoes if not protected. They eat their weight in bugs though. I love to watch them running back and forth eating grasshoppers. I have a peacock and peahen too. Great bug eaters. But noisy? You can hear them nearly a mile away.

I agree. I could have went with what I read in the books, magazines and web sites. But posting here usually get you first hand experience, which is great.

I know the benefits now of having Guinea Fowl but now also the disadvantages (to me) noise. And the noise will be the deciding factor.
