We woild also be in the same shape, except for that damnable flakey white stuff that dumps on us from the skies from November sometimes straight through until May, as it did this year, which we have to scrape off our 1000'gravel lane resulting in loosing a lot of istone to the yard and the margins along the way.
That said, I left about 0.5 ton of #1 crusher run (averaged to 1" rocks down to rock dust) in the bed of my F-350 all winter for traction.
It was open to the weather all winter, and despite the rough ride of an old-style solid axle on heavy duty leaf springs, I felt like I was breaking up concrete to get it out of there this spring.
So with the right mix of dust and proper size of stones, it does pretty well pack down and harden up.

PS: Mega-dittoes on insisting on the written estimate and written updates for any changes or additions- it has saved us from a number of unplanned expenses when contractors, who underbid their competitors only to try to make up the difference by adding on to the original.
