thanks for the info everyone. Today I bought a 1997 f-superduty (the title says 1.5 ton truck). It has 200,047 miles on it and it is in better shape than I thought. The paint is rough on the cab and flatbed so I found someone that is going to repaint it for me for a very reasonable price. It isn't terrible now but I'm one of those guys that like to always have everything in tip/top shape. I took the stake body rails off of it and I am going to mount my 100 gallon fuel tank on it along with a tool box. The flatbed is 12' long and I am not going to need near that deck space so taking some of it up with a fuel tank/tool box isn't going to be an issue. My main reason is to use for moving my tractor around if necessary on the gooseneck and heavy hauling. I'm really looking forward to being setup.

Even a worn out engine will almost always have crosshatch at the bottom part of the bore. Your piston skirts do not usually wear them out. At 284,000 miles it has wear in the top of the bore where your rings are running.

when a piston is at the top end of the stroke there's plenty of "cylinder" exposed that the rings where on. on a side not i've got a powerstroke sitting in the shop that has 208,000 on it, i have torn this engine down to do a complete build up on it. again cross hatches still plenty visible. i can't catch my nail on a ridge on the top of the cylinders and mic. out withing factory specs for the oem pistons.

Lee- check the center of truckball measurement to the corner of the truck bed. Then check the center of gooseneck hitch to the corner of the trailer. Most new goosenecks are setup for 11' beds, older goosenecks 8-9' beds. The guys I know that have gotten the 12 beds have to 45 degree the truck bed corners to give clearence for turning.

Thanks for the advice but this truck has hauled my gooseneck for probably close to 10 years now off and on. I haven't noticed any clearance issues but I will check again to make sure.

Yesterday I had to have a new steering box installed to take the slop out of the steering and right now it is at the autobody place to put a new coat of paint on the cab/bed. So by Monday I should be ready to go.
