I use the Google Chrome browser 95% of the time, however, I have windows XP with service pac 2 and enabled automatic updates. When I open Internet Explorer, I get this popup (screen shot below) within 15 seconds. If I can go to a bookmark quick enough and get off the homepage, I can go ahead and browse. Anyone know how to get rid if this problem? I really would like to upgrade to 7, but it ain't going to happen until I get this fixed first. Ken Sweet

The program MSIEXEC.EXE is a Microsoft Windows program that installs other programs. It is trying to install something (appears to be Windows 7 in your case) but it is being blocked from doing so. If you have any security and/or firewall programs running I suggest you turn those off before trying to install Windows 7.

I only have Microsoft security essentials do a auto quick scan every night, however other than that, I don't run any security. The machine was doing this (over a year now) before I downloaded security essentials. I don't have to be downloading anything. As soon as I go into Internet Explorer, it pops up? Ken Sweet

My guess is the down loader is corrupted, I would go to the below forum and post the same question.

Then I don't know. :confused3: Maybe Microsoft has a solution if you can figure out how to contact them? Support for Windows XP

The web page "behind" the popup seems to be the Anytime Upgrade page from Microsoft, attempting to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7. You mentioned you are at SP2 for XP. The latest Service Pack for Windows XP is 3... I would recommend you attempt to upgrade to that and it may resolve this issue.

Open your Control Panel and then launch the Internet Settings. Check to see what the home page of IE is set for. I would imagine that you could tell it to use no home page or specify something like Google and have the error go away.

First thing when the pop up appears click on "send error report". If this is a known problem Microsoft will send you the information on how to remove.

No information from Microsoft: Open a COMMAND PROMPT and enter the following: SFC /SCANNOW please note the space between SFC and /SCANNOW. Review the information here for more information on SCANNOW: How To Use SFC Scannow to Repair Windows System Files

I''ve NOT been a big fan of Micro$oft and avoid using it when I can.
If this were me, I'd search the internet for this error, if I could not figure out the fix, I'd make copies of my system disks and format C: and reinstall my OS.
But since I mainly use Linux on my machines I don't have these issues.

See Windows Services - disable Error Reporting Service, or set it to manual start instead of automatic.
