anyone know why JD drilled/cast this hole is into the plow's tailwheel?

Greetings all. I am learning about this plow I recently acquired, and am curious to know why it may be there. The hole is just big enough to stick your thumb in, and more oval than round.

This is all conjecture. The hole is oval because it was stamped in when the part was in the flat. It could be a drive hole for the stamping press. It could be a drive hole for a subsequence turning operation or roll forming operation. It was used as a hanging point for the paint line. It was a drain hole for when the parts were stacked and were salt bath hardened or quenched and hardened. That's all I can come up with.

I once asked my grand pappy why he was out in the yard digging a hole. He said: “Well, son …” ...but never finished the sentence. I really wish he had because now it just a hole in the ground that water collects in and I can’t see what’s at the bottom.
