Anyone Lost a Spanner?

Hahahaha. We used to have a co-worker that spilled her beverage in her keyboard about once a week, it seemed. My friend would go to her desk, tip the keyboard into her trash can, let the coffee or tea drain into the trash can, unplug her keyboard, take it to the shop, blow it out with compressed air and bring it back, plug it in, and off she'd go. This went on for years.

Well, one day, she calls to report another spill. He goes out there and it's not coffee or tea.... it yogurt! He takes her keyboard and tosses it into her trashcan. She asks "Aren't you going to clean it?" and he replies "We don't do yogurt!"

You got to set the limit somewhere...

I guess one question I would ask of our British or Tassie friends is what do you guys call the thing that I call a spanner? It is just a spanner to you also just like any other "wrench" you call a spanner already? Or is it truly just a "thingamajig"?

To me a "spanner" is a very very specialized tool that spans a typical object to be tightened and will have two small holes drilled into its edges that match the specialized spanner. An NMO antenna mount is an example. You hold the center piece static with the special spanner and tighten down the outer ring with an open end wrench. Here is a link to a picture. Notice the two holes which will require a specialized spanner to hold it still as you tighten the outer ring.

In British English, spanner is the standard term. The most common shapes are called open-ended spanner and ring spanner. The term wrench refers to a type of adjustable spanner.

In American English, wrench is the standard term. The very most common shapes are called open-end wrench and box-end wrench. In American English, spanner refers to a specialised wrench with a series of pins or tabs around the circumference.

So, yeah, Your (NA) wrench is our spanner and your (NA) spanner is our wrench.

Yep, that's a specific type of spanner. Another type of spanner is a hose spanner for fire or irrigation hoses.

It 'spans' a specific set distance (metric [mm] or Imperial [inches]).

Nah, we call 'em fuel filters too. That one on the other hand is more like a "slimey rusticle" filter. :laughing:
