Anyone notice an abundance of walnuts this year?

The walnuts in our neck of the woods are plentiful and large

Not much nuts of any kind on trees around here, few if any acorns, pecans or walnuts. Of course it could be because of the bumper crop of squirrels. We tried to trap them to keep them away from the pecan trees but they got all the pecans off my brother in laws trees even though he got 15 of the little rodents in his traps.

Lots and lots of walnuts as I have hundreds of walnut trees, definatly more than most years. The hickory nuts and chestnuts are the largest crop I have seen in my 33 years of owning this place. I hope this doesn't mean we will have a bad winter. The older I get, the less I like it.

Anyone here graft walnuts? I have an unknown variety that my mother planted and I want to graft it onto some black walnut stock

I have never seen the amount of walnuts being produced this year. Anyone else noticed how abundant they are? If a fellow wanted to work his a** off, get black hands, all for a very limited payoff, the opportunity is there. Not me. If my wife needs walnuts for Christmas baking, she knows which isle to go to in the grocery store.

A few years back, we had a lot of black walnuts. So, I collected them while walking our trails and put them in bags in the bed of the pickup. Filled up the entire bed of the pickup with one layer of bags.

Drove over the mountain to a farm that dehulls them and pays you for the nuts in shells that they apparently sell to a candy company. I got enough to pay for my gas, only because that pickup got 30 mpg. Not collecting any more black walnuts.

Bumper crop of black walnuts around here. We have a walnut grove, and it's hard to walk without turning an ankle!

The nut of the black walnut is quite different from the English walnuts typically used for baking. A sharper, almost tangy taste, excellent in brownies. I've actually seen them for sale at Costco.

It's the cracking and picking that is too much for me. Even with this nifty walnut cracker I picked up awhile back at Harbor Freight.

Yep. 20 tons of pressure. A bit slow for a bushel, though. And my wife thinks it's overkill.
