Anyone planted spuds yet?

I see you are near the DFW area. When we lived in Collin County near Frisco (when Frisco was a little town) we always waited until after Washington's birthday, February 22nd. We never had a problem with the plants freezing when planted after that date. It isn't too early to transplant onions, however.

I got that feeling yesterday - to dig in the dirt. It was 56 F in the afternoon. Then I realized the gound is still frozen and more than likely, more snow is in our forecast.

In our neck o' the woods (Western NC) the recommendation is on St. Patrick's day. A wee bit of irony, eh?

Here in Central Oklahoma, at least those of us with Irish heritage don't plant potatoes before St. Patrick's Day. Although I have planted them in late February, only to have the tops frozen. They recovered quite nicely though. We usually can't plant onions before the second week of February; that's when the nurseries usually get their plants in. Last year, BTW, was a good year for onions...we had fresh onions all Summer, and harvested about a half bushel, all from a little 100 sq. foot plot.

Saint Patrick's Day, March 17th, is the day I shoot for here. After about 40 years of potato planting, there was only one year when the plants were up and killed by frost. I'm still eating last years' Irish Cobblers and sometimes use those shriveled ones as sets for the new season.

Yeah, as above, the plants do recover, but are not as hardy in my experience. The onions can go in earlier as above.........they were great last season and are still edible this late.

Root crops to in as early in April as possible after the ground dries from the snow melt. Tender frost sensitive plants don't get transplanted outside until the May24 weekend.
