Anyone put grease in Howse cutter gearbox

/ Anyone put grease in Howse cutter gearbox #41
For what it's worth, I bought a used cutter years ago, and upon inspection found the gearbox wouldn't hold oil. I fill with grease at the beginning of each season with no problems.

I think this is a common "fix" for beater bush hogs. :)

It seems the heat will melt the grease.

The corn header grease seems the way to go as it starts out as semi fluid.

Below comments are about 'off label' use of corn header grease.

I bet that box is mostly full of a stiff grease like a #2 grease, with perhaps a bit of oil on the top, or liquified / light grease volatiles on top that get sloshed out when running.

I agree that a softer grease like a 0 or 00 might be better, if this is the case.

On the other hand, a box of grease will be hard to clean out.. Ive fixed boxes like that packed with #2, and it took filling with diesel and running under no load to solvate the grease to remove it.

Sometimes in those cases, it's just as easy to agg some gear oil to it and just run it, and let the nominal grease fill and gear oil mix.. result is still a lube level onthe gears... In the case of a beater box... not the end of the world, and better than no lube at all.
