Anyone run a hyd pump w/ a 12V clutch?

I am considering the use of a 12V clutch, like you see on your car's
AC compressor, to run a hydraulic pump. The pump would be about
1/5 cu in/ rev, and I would like to be able to get 1500psi out of it.

Anyone try that? I am concerned that the belt(s) and electromagnetic
clutch be able to transfer enough torque to the pump without
slipping.

You can buy them at surplus center built for hydraulic use...

Fisher snow plows makes a pump like you describe. They used to run plow hydraulics for pickup truck blades. Have not heard of alot of failures with this set up.

Click on this link. You should not have any problems running the clutch off of the fan belt, except for the belt width.

On my Power-Trac, the steering and lift arms are powered by a hydraulic pump driven by the fan belt on the engine. Just a pulley on a small Barnes hydraulic pump, of .194 cu in. and provides all fluid to steer and lift up to 1200 lbs. I believes it supplies anywhere from 1.5 to 3 GPM of fluid. I have two other pumps to power other things, that are engine shaft driven.

Yeah, that's the very pump I want to use. I know SurpCntr carries the
clutches for $70, and I can also buy the a clutch/pump setup for $500
from Northern. I would like to use the $70 clutch or steal one off an
AC compressor. Surpcntr's clutch only handles 75 ft-lbs of torque, according
to their specs. If that is enough to generate 1500 psi using the Barnes
pump, that would work.

JJ, at what pressure does your clutch-controlled pump run? Maybe the
PT runs the other pumps off the engine without the 12V clutch because
they are higher pressure and volume?

I am thinking that the electric clutch pulley have a tapered bore. The pump I posted will put out 3000 psi. and has a 1/2 in straight shaft. My pump has pulley on the shaft, and runs when the engine is running.

Those 12 v clutches might be the same as the A/C clutches, and you can get them at the junk yard.

Yes, the Surpcntr clutches have tapered bores, and that is a problem. I
suspect that AC comp clutches may have tapered bores, too.

I know the Barnes pump can put out plenty of pressure. The question I had
relates to what pressure you are running with that pump. If your relief is
set too high, I would think the clutch or belt(s) will slip. Esp if the clutch
can only handle 75 ft-lbs before slipping.

What is the application? How are you going to use it. My pump runs when the engine running. When the fluid is not being used, it goes back to tank.

I am considering the use of a 12V clutch to power a hyd dump cyl for my
project Suzuki Samurai ATV dump bed. The options are:

> 12V electric motor powering a hyd pump (aka hyd "power pack")
> 12V clutch/pump, running off the crank pulley, when needed
> always-on hyd pump running off the crank pulley, aka power steering pump.
I have not tried this, but I am concerned that they put out very low
pressure and volume
