Anyone seen the Milky Way lately?

Some nights with no moon, no clouds and low humidity I can just make out the Milky Way, if I let my eyes adjust. I am surprised I can see it, and if the major development happens as planned, I soon won't be able to see the MW due to light pollution.

Later,
Dan

I can easily see the Milky Way on clear nights. You think you see lots of stars here until you visit the desert where the air is much drier and clearer. Then you realize what you aren't seeing.

There is not a lot of light pollution here but I can see the glow on the horizon of two towns that are each about 10 miles away.

I live about 600 foot off the country road on top of a small ridge. We have one night light at the garage side of the house. If you go out the basement in the back the house blocks all of the light and the stars are beautiful especially in the winter when there is less humidity in the air.

This summer my son walked out with me after sunset and said WOW...look at all the stars. We only lived here about 5 years and the house before was in a small development with lots of nightlights. So he did not see them as much growing up as I did.

I started pointing out the big and little dipper and others. If we take the mule down to the river it is pitch black and the sky is just amazing. Makes you realize what a small speck we are in the universe.

We get to see it nights there is no cloud cover, awesome and kinda takes me back to my youth.
When our granddaughter visited last year it was one of our high points as I'm sure she never sees it back in Va (near DC)

One day last week, our Son, who has Down;s, went on the Front Deck. After awhile he came back in saying, "Big Dad, Come outside and look at the Stars". We sat looking at the stars for quite sometime. It was one of those "Quality Times". Thanks for posting.

Good Afternoon Moss,
On a clear moonless night the milky way really stands out here in East Wells, Rutland is 25 mins to our North East with a few mountains in between and Glens Falls in Ny state is a good 45 mins to our west, so no real city light impairing the Milky Way view...

Yep definitely a treat to see under the right conditions !:)

Make contact with your local astronomical societies. We have Star Parties on a regular basis, where we all go camp out in the mountains or desert far from light pollution. You don't need a telescope, people are glad to show off theirs. Bring red flashlights, showing a white light after dark (even a candle) will get you ejected from the party.

The last couple of nights have been wonderful for looking at the stars! I see the Milky Way, on cloudless nights, more often than not. I can nearly always find the Big Dipper, and when the season is right, the Little Dipper too! The star filled sky is one of my favorite things (among many) of living where I do.

Roughest water I've ever seen! No time to gaze at the sky during that as we were trying to keep the ship, and ourselves, alive. 55 degree rolls, front third of the ship out of the water and slamming, propeller cavitating as the ship shuddered from the impacts. What a ride!

Mate, thanks for bringing back the memories of a North Atlantic storm! A roller coaster has nothing on one of those... the near weightless climb up an internal ladder then hanging on for dear life, the ship shuddering after it slammed back down.

WHEW! What a ride.

But, getting back to the OP, there were those beautiful crystal clear nights at sea where, looking up into the riot of stars, you'd swear that you were going to fall into the sky. I am fortunate to have those same nights here on my property. :)
