I found this in mother earth news...anyone seen this or used one? Looks like a "neet" piece of equipment to have around if you can't afford a BH on your tractor /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.......

I agree. Note the specs only give hydraulic flow, nothing about pressure. No digging force, bucket breakout force or boom lift capacities.

Does that 9hp motor provide enough counter weight for digging?

Boom only swings 60 degrees left and right instead of 90.

One often wonders, when seeing these things, if they actually work.

In a word, yes. But the problem isn't so much the strength of the hydraulics, but the weight (or lack thereof) of the machine. My dad bought one like this some years ago with a Honda 5.5 HP motor on it, and the hydraulics were plenty strong. The only way to keep it stationary was to leave it hitched to my truck, then put the truck in neutral and set the parking brake. Great for landscaping type stuff.

Strenght is usually not an issue directly for hydraulics, its the tradeoff of strength, speed, and those fun things.

A 30 HP Diesel provides some umph to my kubota hoe on the 3010, but not as much as my 580C had with its 60 hp (or whatever it had).

I get movement would be an issue like you say, but it still looks to me like not worth much.
