mossflowerwoods that is a good idea for alot of reasons but one that i delt with. if you get some kind of soil problem in one area you can then switch them off with no problem hope you never do but you will be ready if happens our neighbor had 2 horses several years ago got foot rot and had to do what youu are doing. he fenced of sections and keept them off of the infected part i think it took about 2 years before he could put the horses back onit the problem we had with leting our goats run on same land was worms constantly we subdived it built fence cured our probllem

I can keep half the manure in an easy to clean area, etc. I am really looking to simplify care keep costs down.

Why don't you want the manure out in one of the main pastures for fertilizer ? I have the same setup you are talking about but I leave the gate to one of the main pastures secured open. I'm not sure how closing a horse (whose method of defense is to flee) into a small area protects them.
