Anyone used the PT flial mower?

Folks, I have noticed that after turning off the PTO switch, the blades on my 48" PT Brush Cutter will continue to spin for at least 15 seconds before completely stopping. Its not safe to let anyone approach the mower until you see that the blades have stopped.

15 seconds is a conservative estimate!

I don't get off my tractor until I can see the lovejoy connector not turning.

You ever toss a blade with that brush hog? Mine went about 45-50 feet.

A few weeks ago I was brush hogging a friend's property (for free, I won't take payment) and hit a brick. It exploded, a piece went skipping across the ground about 75', under my trailer and another 10' stopping next to the property owner who thought he would be safe behind my truck. They are not tools to be taken lightly, that's for sure.

Dear MR,

Exactly!

For extra fun, the Brush Hog manual also suggested that all fields be walked prior to mowing... :)
Uh hunh. Riiiight. Great thought by some arm chair lawyer. As if you could see that brick in the weeds.

Personally, I stop all tractor movement, if I can see traffic coming by on the road nearby. With the 72" brush cutter, chunks of brush can sail a long way. My wife now spots me from a long, long way away. I haven't timed the spin down on the 72", but it is awhile.

Back to the original thread- I would probably be better served by the flail mower at this point, but I would be grubbing and hand chipping alot without the brush cutter.

All the best,

Peter

The PTO valve is designed that way to let the fluid recirculate so the hyd motor can lose the energy in the blades safely.

After you shut off the PTO, the hyd motor is now acting as a pump and if there was no where for the fluid to go, it could build up enough pressure to blow something.

If you throttle down to idle before disengaging the PTO, it will spin down MUCH faster and is easier on the PTO brake (if so equipped).

I was able to get on the PT website tonight. No such attachment for the 1430 on their price list. My mistake, thought I saw that particular item before. Oh well, thanks all

These aren't low HP items, so I'm not too surprised.

Thanks for an interesting thread!

All the best,

Peter

During the first year I found many rocks and field stones hiding in the brush, but I have not tossed a blade or cracked a bolt yet. The areas where I usually brush-hog is fairly clear of stones now. It will get interesting this summer when I open up new areas. The blades look kinda beat-up but still cut good. I just purchased new blades and bolts from PT as backup.

Figured I would jump in late..... IrTxRx if you are still considering a flail, they can and do fine cuts such as often seen at schools, parks, office complexes, etc, and are MUCH safer to any bystanders or windows. Road-sides are often rougher cut as they hit more debris and such.

Regarding using one on a PT, one could look at hydraulically driven models (Italian are quite good, Chinese less so) and while matching hyd flow and pressure, fairly simply fabricate mounting bracket to the PT.

If one could find a good cheap used mechanical-PTO unit one could still do a full conversion and end up with a very nice flail mower set-up. Under different circumstances, I would seriously consider do something like this.

Good Luck!
