I just got the new Forestry Suppliers catalog and saw this spreader Forestry Suppliers - Thompson 3PH Spreader. I know nothing about it, but I noticed they do not say it will spread sand. I was thinking of using something like this for a light spread of granular melters. Has anyone used one of these? Any thoughts?

Last line says it will spread ice melters.... ( Comprehensive spreading chart: lists fertilizers, seed, pesticides, ice melters, baits. )

I know it (says it) will spread ice melters. I was kind of looking for something with the versatility to spread sand also, should I decide to go that route. I was really wondering if anyone had used one of these spreaders before and what their experience was. The price on this spreader looks pretty reasonable...

I'm using a Work Saver 3ph spreader for "traction aggregate", (my supplier's label) which is a fine crushed gravel. Sand tends to pack and clog and is polished which causes it to wash off the surface during melting or rain..much more so than the fine crushed aggregate which has rough, jagged edges that adhere to the surface. It's a little courser that sand and doesn't pack, even when wet.

I did install the optional roller agitator which would probably work sand. I just don't recommend sand for traction (unless that's all you've got).

One other thing..I think all of these spreaders will work fine. The major differences will probably be in the quality and materials used in their construction...hence..lifespan. All of the metering outlets will be similar to achieve the broadcast pattern and spread. The agitators will vary, which may be an issue with the product being dispensed.

Have not tried this spreader, but I am using a Herd Sand Spreader. It is specifically for spreading manufactured sand (more like fine gravel) with a hopper agitator, adjutable wings for modifying the spread and a grill on top of the hopper to ensure big chuncks do not get in and bust a shear pin. It is significantly more expensive ($1,100) but it works great and holds over 500 lbs.

I use a spreader from Tractor Supply Co. I believe it is made by Worksaver. I have the center wheel agitator and I use 10-10-10-10 fertilizer for ice and snow control. I was told about this years ago , no damage to bedding plants or grass. Does help green up in the spring. Very good traction on ice with this product. Mark

Fertilizer??? Does this melt the snow???

Most all fertilizers are made from 'salts-of-something' and so yes, they do melt snow & ice to some degree.
