Worked pipe construction for 25 years as a welder/fitter;never saw any-one use one of those.Most common on pipe-line welders,out-doors and down hill welding.
On low pressure steam inside boilers we could do a downhand open root with 6010. After the gap was filled, we would grind the ever living snot out of it, then finish the weld going up-hill with 7018, and of course stringers (no weaving).
I think 40 psi was the top end of that kind of weld though.
