Anyone using goats for clearing underbrush?

Some town in ID, Boise maybe, use goats to clear brush around the municipal water reservoir. They didn't want to use herbicides that could have contaminated the drinking water. bjr

What do you do for fencing?

What we use for our does is 4x4x48" welded wire fencing. It works OK. But have to watch sometimes a smaller goat (especially with horns) can get their head stuck. When we built a pen for our babies we went with 2x4x48" welded wire. Holding up much better and no stuck heads. Their barn is our 36x54 barn.

For our 2 Boer bucks we are using "Economy" 12' cattle panels from TSC. These have the 7 (I think) bars on them and pin together. They are big enough they can't get out of them. I was a little worried about stuff getting in to them, but so far they've been OK. Course, these guys are big enough (between 300 & 350 lbs each) and mean enough they can do a pretty good job of defending themselves and each other. Their barn is an 8x16 wood garden shed.

Our wethers and our young Boer, Alpine, and LaMancha bucks are in the 6' tall chain link dog kennel panels. I think we have 10 panels linked together for them. Right now there are 7 total in there. 3 are wethers - 2 will be going to the fair in August, 1 will go to either ours or someone else's freezer shortly there after and the 2 Boer bucks are for sale. They use an 8x10 metal shed for a barn. We glued 1 1/2" Styrofoam insulation to the ceiling. It is on a wooden deck. I put 2x2s around the inside and a 2x4 around the shed mid-way up and put OSB on the inside to keep them from beating the shed up. Been about 6 weeks and working well so far.

I had 17 of them as a hobby once. Could not keep them in a fence! I was told that their hair is hollow and therefore insulative. I did watch them over and over go under a cattle hot wire fence just sliding down their back and never seem to get a jolt.
The weather remark is another thing to remember. They have to be able to stay reasonably warm and out of the rain.
I caught them playing "king of the mountain" one morning on my new pickup. Off to the auction they went.
An old timer once told me that the very best way to check a fence is put a goat behind it. I believe that one.
