+1 for PagePlus. I moved an out of contract VerizonWireless iPhone 4S over a year ago, and I can't tell any difference in coverage or quality of service. I signed up over the web, but got stuck and called their customer service number. A very well spoken and informed CSR had me going in just a few minutes. I didn't have to install any software or buy a SIM. My bill went from $90/mo to $30/mo, and now I can txt whereas the Verizon plan didn't include it. The prepaid card renews automatically every month, and I get a txt confirmation a day or two beforehand to let me know everything's OK. The PP web site gives access to account info, calling records for voice, txt, and data, and phone configuration. The only minor draw back is that customer service is only available during the day on weekdays, so if you have a problem at night or on weekends you may be stuck for a while. 1200 minutes and 500Gb/data/month, what's not to like?
As a side note, the electricity went off for most of a day here last week, and I had no cell service or Internet as a result. I have a land line though, and it kept working just fine. That let me check in with the utility for repair information, and I'm also on the county emergency notification system, which I'm told only works with land lines. Nice to have in wildfire country.
