30 years ago, I worked for a masonry contractor and we used Pettibone high-lifts similar to the one in the picture. Neat machine and it was fun to operate. Had a hydraulic transmission with two "gas" pedals, forward and reverse.
When you needed to sit still and needed more power to operate the lift, you pushed both pedals at once and it stayed in neutral while the engine rpm increased.
It was 4WD and, if I remember correctly, it also had 4 wheel steering. Unlike the one in the picture, the ones we used had an extended lift on them, which was basically a telescoping forklift mounted where the regular forks are in the picture.
It could reach up to about 3 stories and I think it was the great grandfather of the modern telehandlers.
