They are an issue in my area and by that I mean don't walk in field at night just in case. The adjoining land owner who has the fields that run to the swamps has his land hunted each winter. They do some digging in my field. Can be really bad temperament and much faster than many think.

I am on the other side of the state, but have not heard of anyone seeing them. Turkeys are starting to get a decent population in our area and the deer doing very well.......

You might have hogs there and not even know it. For the first few years that I owned my land, I never saw a hog. They were here, but they do not come out into the open very often and they are mostly nocturnal. They cannot cool themselves, and will die if they get too hot. Don't know if they can get too cold, but they do great in Siberia, so it would have to be colder then that to bother them.

Hog tracks look just like a calf track. Short and round. Not like a deer track at all, and very easy to distinguish between the two. They are both split hoof, but while a deer is long, narrow and pointed at the tip, a hog track is short, wide and blunt at the tip. On cattle ranches, it's almost impossible to tell the difference between a hog and a calf.

We are getting the wild hogs around here. I heard that they are a non-game animal or you only need a small game license. The are reputed to be extremely destructive to the fields. Probably more so here as they are very soupy in spring and fall.

They are pretty constant in our area - amazing how they can tear up a place. Often hear them at night, not the most pleasant of sounds. Couple of the neighbors smoke the meat. One neighbor further up mountain used to be a vegetarian, but the pigs were eating more of his garden than he was. Now he eats a lot of pork. :D

Most folks don't see the sunny side of hogs in the community.

1. fun to hunt.
2. can hunt 365 days of the year and 24 hrs of the day.
3. unlimited possesion and you don't even have to worry about trying to find a pig after the shot if you don't want to or you can break out the automatic high powered rifle and just go on a killing spree...it's all legal.
4. can hunt with "any" weapon, gun, bow, spear, knife, sword, stick, dogs, truck, tractor...anything
5. they taste good....what else can one ask for....year round hunting and they taste good.

Try to do this with any other game animal and you will end up in jail.

From the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency's Hunting and Trapping Guide, bolding added:

In just over a decade, the distribution of Tennessee’s feral
hog population has spread at an alarming rate. Although
first confined to small pockets in East Tennessee and the
Cumberland Plateau, it is now estimated that viable hog
populations can be found in close to a third of Tennessee’s
counties. We need to stop the spread, and stop the spread
now. Feral hog season is open year-round on private lands
with no bag limits whatsoever. In other words, we want
you to kill as many hogs as possible to slow their spread.

So please help us take aim at controlling feral hog populations.

NOTE: Releasing feral hogs is a federal offense and is in
violation of USDA regulations. Anyone providing information
leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals
releasing feral hogs may be eligible for a $100 reward.
