First, I own an iPad and like it, so I'm not bashing Apple from a PC standpoint. It's just that I have always thought Apple Corporation treated employees like they were only there to help Apple stockpile money. Money first, people last. So intent are they on commandeering the phone/tablet/laptop/music/and-anything-else-they-can-manage market that they will subject their employees to ridicule, admonishment, long hours and low wages to get there. Yes, they make a nice product, but at what cost? This precedent was set by Jobs and continues to this day from what I can see.

The local Apple campus (in Elk Grove, CA) has announced the hiring of 800 new people. According to the local news, all the jobs start at 8 bucks an hour. This from the world's most valued company with how many billions in the bank? That's a whopping net total of $1,280 per month without overtime. That's enough to buy an iPhone with about half left over for a tank of gas and a bag of groceries. Yet, there are hundreds of people in line hoping to score one of these jobs which is an indication of the wonderful shape our economy isn't in. I hope they all live with their parents.

Apple and Walmart, I won't shop at either, period. Human Beings are treated as slave labor to serve the masses who love the cheap deal.

Canada it appears, is heading that way as well - cheap imported overseas labour (Indian, Chinese etc.) to replace properly trained Canadians at a fraction of the cost.
Companies forget that to buy their products the workers need adequate wages. At least Ford realised that back in the earl 1900's.

Lets see STARTING wage $8 an hour. Not enough to do all the things one would like to do. But it is enough to live or survive on.

First these jobs are in the USA. These people will be putting $$ back in the economy. While not paying income tax at that rate of pay the will be paying other taxes. All good things. Some of them will also qualify for food stamps. It could also take some of them off the welfare rolls as well.

Starting Wage is just that a "Starting Wage". Most if not all of these people will have to be trained, depending on the job, the ones that work out will move up and earn more $$$. While being trained they are not an asset to the company, it takes time & $$$ to train people.

At some point in time these folks will need to earn the company more that it costs to work them. Company's have to pay SSI, workers comp on top of the wages. A company has to make $$ to stay in business, if not happening it goes out of business in time.

In the USA Apple employs thousands of people, most all of them make far more than minimum wage.

Now the kick at Wal-Mart. It employs many thousands of workers in the USA. Recently it started buying only USA made goods. May take a while to get that done, but it is starting. More jobs in the US. I have niece that works for them, she started at minimum wage and now is the head of the tire department.
Wal-mart also tries to employ older retired folks who need more or extra income. Look around next trip by a store.
Wal- Mart also has better employe health insurance than anything offered under Obama Care.

Fry's & Safeway stores hire a lot of people that are mostly unemployable, use them as baggers, cleaning & sweeping.

Another Big Plus is Most People feel good about being able to work and earning their way in life.

Before you go bashing company's, they are the backbone of America. With out them there would be no America.

I'm not an Apple fanboy (don't own a single Apple product) but how does hiring people at $8 an hour make Apple a bad company? Companies exist to make money, that's what they do. It is not their function to make people feel good.

"Before you go bashing company's, they are the backbone of America. With out them there would be no America."

There is a reasonable balance between the above and the below:

People are real the backbone of America. Without them there would be no businesses.

When Apple, Walmart, Exxon-Mobil, etc. can come home is body bag, your statement would be correct. Economic systems exist to serve people. Businesses are a means to that end, not a religion.

I have never been to California but some claim that $8 does not have the same purchasing power as $8 in Tennessee.

, Makes no sense. What did you mean?? your statement would be correct. Economic systems exist to serve people. Businesses are a means to that end, not a religion.

Religion was not mentioned in any way shape or form.

Yes people are the true backbone of America. But with people the company's built America into what it is today.
Not all company's are good or treat people fairly, nor are all bad.

Early on company's, not the government using your tax $$, built the Bridges, railroads, highways, etc. All of these things have advanced out nation to be the #1 in the world.

$8 An hour does not buy in CA does not buy as much as it does in most other states. NY & NJ may be even worse. But it still gives people a chance to earn their own way & get a start.

I am not a big fan of large company's, they put me out of business many years ago & cost me thousands of $$$.
But I do look at the world realistically.
