Apple hires 800 at $8/hr

Volt is probably one of those employment services that "temp" out their people to work at Apple. All the major employers here go that route. A temp doesn't get on the retirement plan, the insurance (if any) is covered by the employment service, and if they don't cut the mustard, then a temp is much easier to get rid of than a company hire. Here, they use the temps as a vetting service - if you do good work, show up on time, etc, then you usually get an offer to work for the big company, with all the benefits and perks.

North American Stainless does this all the time, you start out as a temp, then after 90 days and you're still around, you can apply for a full hire position with NAS. The temp jobs start anywhere from $8 - $11 per hour with very few benefits, depending on the particular job, the full hire positions usually start at $15 on up, with full benefits and bonuses.

I don't know, TS... the newscast you linked to said an employment agency was looking to fill 800 positions for multiple companies. One of those interviewed said she hoped to get into Apple's call center or warehouse. But nothing I heard said anything about Apple hiring 800 people at $8 per hour. The thread title doesn't fit the content. That's all anyone is trying to tell you. Now if you want a debate on $8.00 per hour jobs, why not just start a thread about that?

Lets see STARTING wage $8 an hour. Not enough to do all the things one would like to do. But it is enough to live or survive on.

First these jobs are in the USA. These people will be putting $$ back in the economy. While not paying income tax at that rate of pay the will be paying other taxes. All good things. Some of them will also qualify for food stamps. It could also take some of them off the welfare rolls as well.

Starting Wage is just that a "Starting Wage". Most if not all of these people will have to be trained, depending on the job, the ones that work out will move up and earn more $$$. While being trained they are not an asset to the company, it takes time & $$$ to train people.

At some point in time these folks will need to earn the company more that it costs to work them. Company's have to pay SSI, workers comp on top of the wages. A company has to make $$ to stay in business, if not happening it goes out of business in time.

In the USA Apple employs thousands of people, most all of them make far more than minimum wage.

Now the kick at Wal-Mart. It employs many thousands of workers in the USA. Recently it started buying only USA made goods. May take a while to get that done, but it is starting. More jobs in the US. I have niece that works for them, she started at minimum wage and now is the head of the tire department.
Wal-mart also tries to employ older retired folks who need more or extra income. Look around next trip by a store.
Wal- Mart also has better employe health insurance than anything offered under Obama Care.

Fry's & Safeway stores hire a lot of people that are mostly unemployable, use them as baggers, cleaning & sweeping.

Another Big Plus is Most People feel good about being able to work and earning their way in life.

Before you go bashing company's, they are the backbone of America. With out them there would be no America.

Very good posting outlining how corporations are making enormous profits by paying a low salary and letting the tax payers subsidize employees by providing, food stamps, housing vouchers, Medicaid Insurance coverage, etc. How many more such businesses can the tax payer support by providing tax rebates to the corporation and subsidizes to there employees?

Why I bet if we actually worked at it the current 48% receiving subsidizes can be increased to 60% by 2016 or 2018. What do you think?

I used to think usury and gouging was frowned on and in most cases outlawed in the USA.

Now it's the norm if not encouraged.

"Before you go bashing company's, they are the backbone of America. With out them there would be no America."

There is a reasonable balance between the above and the below:

People are real the backbone of America. Without them there would be no businesses.

When Apple, Walmart, Exxon-Mobil, etc. can come home is body bag, your statement would be correct. Economic systems exist to serve people. Businesses are a means to that end, not a religion.

Well said! Business for some losers is religion. God help us.

As normal you can't or don't address the whole post or dispute the facts.
Your less than well though out reply misses actual facts.

$8 an hour with some government help is far better than all $$$ & benefits coming form the government (Tax Payers $$).
Think it over.

As mentioned earlier new hires start a minimum wage, if they work out they will move up. None of this addresses company profits, that is another can of worm's. Just keep in mind that a company not making $$$ is on its way out of business and all employee's, go on unemployment or welfare.

Speaking of "body bags" and "religion" how much does a E1 make You Know; those Guys and Gals that just might come home in a body bag? They make less than the $10.10/hr that Obozo wants to pay federal workers. They make ~$9.57/hr based on 40 hr how many solders work only 40 hr. No sense in stating the obvious in the min wage debate because the proponent argue and act as if it were a religion.

2 question that need to be answered

1. Who pays for the increase in min wage? (Think before you answer)
2. Why not $20.20/hr min wage wouldn't that be better for everyone? (This is the question that I would like answered)

And a final note on business; A business does not pay for wages, taxes, Etc increases in either. The consumer always pays take gas for instance .58 a gallon in Michigan

Layoffs are the employees paying the company, or more accurately, the executive's obscene bonuses.

We don't need government-mandated economic systems (min. wage, etc.) - what we need is what the nation's founder's intended: a government-mandated equal opportunity.

This means no more imports of products from countries not subject to the same government regulations as U.S. companies are subjected to. Simple.

Of course, this will never happen since our government representatives are bought off by lobbyist campaign contributions from the very companies they are supposed to regulate.

We have morphed into a corrupt Bananna Republic of America.

I think in the consideration of fairness, the names of the thousands of Mom and Pop business that also pay minimum wage need to be added to the title of this post. Oh, are there that many characters available?

There are many small business owners (like myself) that would be lucky to make $8.00 an hour at the end of the day!

People arn't forced to take these jobs.

We in Ontario Canada have a Government that is buying Votes for the upcoming election by throwing money at the poor. Raising min wage to $11.00 an hour for instance. They will probably win and this form of economic thinking will simply kill the Goose That Lays The Golden Egg. What is left of Business and Industry will simply leave! The saddest thing is, that the damage will have been done and will be unrepairable for a very long time. Teachers, healthcare workers, government and so forth do not create any value in the economy! They are just a drain!

What would have been the hourly rate if they hired 800 in China?

Working at the minimum wage end of the salary scale generally means you get less that 30 hours/week = no benefits.
Box stores like Walmart find it a good strategy to hire often and not retain employees.
People don't quite make enough to live on and if they have families, generally qualify for food stamps and medicaid (maine care in maine). The government ends up subsidizing a company like Walmart by making it possible for their low end minimum wage employees to keep showing up for work. We, the tax payers pay the bill. Walmart should raise the wages to make up the difference, or pay the government directly for the cost of services provided directly to their employees. Whenever a Walmart comes to town, local business suffers, and wages are undercut. And the money does not stay in the community. Walmart helped to accelerate outsourcing.
Apple is not much better.

Isn't it better to have lousy paying jobs at Walmart being subsidized to some degree by the Government rather then Wellfare people staying at home squeezing out kids that will largly never work either.

You really should move to the states. Maybe Mississippi? You'd feel right at home there, lots of other folks there feel just like you do! :)

I'm not suggesting that either scenareo is particularly attractive. Just which you would choose between the two. I enter a Walmart maybe once a year. But I do ackowledge all the Chinese stuff in my life! I don't make a lot of money and have never made a lot of money, so having all these cheap goods available to me, increases my standard of living. When I demand quality, as with my tools and equipment, I buy traditional name brand stuff. You mostly get what you pay for.

I'm not being stubborn here, I just don't respond to people with attitudes (not you) as they would like me to. Also, I know what I heard and the wife heard it too. We had a long conversation about it directly after. I made the post shortly after so I stick to the premise. It is interesting that the only published newscast I could round up that was done by that particular station was not the one we witnessed. So I dunno, maybe Lisa Gonzales (the anchor we heard) revealed more than station management wanted her to and they posted a later version of the story. I used to hang around Elk Grove and until Apple moved in, there wasn't 800 jobs in the whole town. Whether it's 800 or 400 doesn't really change anything. Call it a typo if desired but I wrote the title with clear conscience and a fresh memory. All told, no doubt Apple has hired one heck of a lot more than 800 at that low wage and lower.

I try to buy American made products whenever I can. You go to the websites to find companies/products, and most have been reduced to irrelevant trinkets. All the normal stuff we need & want has been outsourced, thanks to favorable tax treatment to ship manufacturing overseas.

And who did that? Why our illustrious government 'representatives' who have been bought off by the lobbyists of the same companies that benefit from it.

Welcome to the Bannana Republic of the Americas.
