So here's the deal ... I ploughed under a fallow field last fall, and left it in furrough. I am looking to plant (broadcast/disk) soybean.

So I know I have to disk it level before planting, but, when should I apply roundup? Never used it before. The seed I have is roundup ready.

Should I disk it level, wait till the weeds come up, then spray, then plant? Or should I disk it level, plant, wait for weeds to come up then spray ?

I would kill everything with off brand glyphosate before planting. Then plant your seeds. The literature should tell you when you can use it after the seeds sprout. I have planted within hours of spraying glyphosate.

Roundup ie glyphosate, generally kills off all plants, Roundup ready means that they are resisant to the effects of glyphosate. You can use it to kill off any weeds growing in the plot before planting then use Roundup to control weeds in the plot after the soybeans reach certain stage of growth. Check with you seed supplier for the exact details.

Roundup kills virtually all living plants. Don't spray it on any plant you don't want to kill. However, once it hits the ground, it's gone. Weeds can sprout as soon as the Roundup dries and will not be affected by the Roundup.

One exception is that you can spray Roundup on weeds at the bases of trees. Roundup will not affect the tree trunk. However, if you spray the tree leaves, you may kill the tree.

Personally, I love Roundup (and the generic knockoffs) and use a lot of the stuff.

In the Deep South most landowners regard it as a necessity. I don't waste Roundup on cool season weeds which usually don't amount to much. I wait until the daily high temperatures are in the mid 90's F and the warm season weeds sprout. The remaining cool season weeds will die on their own and the Roundup can deal with the much tougher warm season weeds.

For food plots I disc it, spray it and then plant corn and soybean. The weeds are usually unable to get a foothold before the bean and corn take over. As others have said your seed supplier should have pretty specific instructions. JMHO

I don't think you understand the concept of round-up ready seeds. That means you can spray the plot after the soybeans have come up and not hurt them. You most assuredly paid extra for the RU ready seeds so you might as well spray after the plantss are up. I have sprayed over the top of round-up ready corn plants for years with great success. RU ready seeds have eliminated the need for higher priced over the top chemicals that were only specific to certain weeds anyway. It can be nerve racking to spray RU directly on a crop you planted, but trust that the RU will not hurt RU ready plants.

I understand that, my concern was that the weeds already in the soil that are getting disked in prior to seeding will over grow the soy ?

I usually just plow/disk the crap out of things and then plant ... so this is kinda new to me (using chemicals to kill weeds)

As I said in the previous post I find that planting corn with the beans and spraying before planting tends to keep the weeds from growing. Others I know just plant, wait for the weeds and spray -- this approach might be cheaper in that I might have to do it twice and they might not but so far we have only sprayed once in either case. I suppose you could use the spray later approach only if you get too many weeds and you already have the RU ready seed. This year I plan to plant ordinary corn and beans in a plot just to see if I really need the added expense of RU and RU ready seed.

Disk, plant and when the weeds come out... spray with Roundup. Disking is the poor man's way of killing weeds so if you have extra money, feel free to spray before you disk to kill them twice...

If you are doing no-till, use roundup before planting as a burn down and give the seedlings less competition once they sprout. :2cents:
