AR Rifles..

Why do so many folks keep assuming they are going to try and outlaw certain firearms?...it's not going to happen...
They may try to put tighter restrictions on ownership of certain weapons and ammunition stores etc...they may try to enact laws that require licenses for a much wider list of firearms...

What they will do is try and make it harder for unstable individuals to legally purchase firearms and ammo...and to do that anyone wanting to buy a firearm is going to be required to prove they are not a kook and have never been prescribed certain medications or been treated for certain conditions etc., etc...and when you check the boxes on the form and sign it...the fine print will say that you are agreeing to allow them to search your medical, employment and financial records etc., etc...

Well, example would be a good start.

"They" did it in Australia
They did it in New Zealand
They did it in Great Britain
They did it in Venezuela

Could it happen here?

My in laws are from Poland. They had nazis show up at their farm and basically say - this is ours leave. At least one family member resisted and got shot.

I dont have a farm, but I would sit on the roof and pick off assholes 1 at time (ultimately being shot myself) before I got ran out of a house I owned.

AND ... it shouldn't be restricted now.

A criminal is a danger with a pocket knife.
A typical citizen would not pose a danger with a hand grenade.

Unless someone is a CONVICTED FELON or adjudicated mentally incompetent or a proven abuser - the government needs to pixx off.

The type/quantity of firearms you own is NONE of the government's business. The amount of ammunition you own is NONE of the government's business.
I don't know about hand grenades. There are too many stupid people. I think accidental explosions would be a problem. Oh no the pin fell out. Boom.

Maybe...but the Darwin Awards would take care of most of the stupid people. I just hope I'm not standing next to one at the time...

That's the problem someone would be.

Trying to get back to the questions asked by the OP...

A few questions for people that have them.

1. Why did you purchase it?
- Used it in the service - happy with it as a plinker - great for teaching kids and ladies - as there is no recoil
2. Other than capacity what advantages do they have as opposed to a semi automatic traditional rifle?
- Looks great - no recoil - no wood to scratch up in the woods - lots of accessories like bipods and lights
3. Did you build you're rifle or buy it complete?
- have done both
4. What caliber did you purchase and why?
- 223 - accurate enough for plinking and yotes
- 410 shotgun - simply fun as **** and why the **** not - also wife uses it for home defense primary
- 45 Raptor on on an AR10 frame - massive impact for hogs and yotes, great 100-200 yard gun
5. Is the SW sport 2 Magpul MOE M-LOK a decent firearm?
- unknown - but if it is "Mil-spec" it will last your lifetime and that of your kids if treated properly

I thought I would open a thread to understand the AR rifle.

I have many firearms but no AR's, lots of people have them that go to the range I am a member of, I don't see the need for me to purchase one at this point. If I use a rifle for some reason I use a bolt action rifle.

A few questions for people that have them.

1. Why did you purchase it?
Always preferred the AK pattern rifles, but figured if the ****, .223 and 5.56 ammo would be more available. However, once I got my 1st AR-15 (Rock River Arms, about 15 years ago), I really enjoyed shooting it. I bought a S&W MP-2 about 2 years ago as well.
2. Other than capacity what advantages do they have as opposed to a semi automatic traditional rifle?
Can't answer that as my rifles are either semi-auto AR or AK pattern, bolt or lever action
3. Did you build you're rifle or buy it complete?
Bought both as complete rifles
4. What caliber did you purchase and why?
5.56 due to the ability to also use .223 and the easy availability of both 5.56 and .223 ammunition
5. Is the SW sport 2 Magpul MOE M-LOK a decent firearm?
I like the Sport 2 as a budget AR-15. The Rock River Arms rifle is definitely a higher quality gun.

I have a 2016 Colt Canada SA20 (this is the civilian Diemaco C7 - semiauto only). Here in Canada they are a range rifle only, you need authorization to take it anywhere. I have other Colt Canada, Diemaco, Armalite, S&W, and Dlask AR15s too.
1. Why did you purchase it?
I bought it because I used this rifle in the army. I know it inside out and backwards, and I bought this brand because I know it is one of the best AR builds out, in terms of R&D and QC.
2. Other than capacity what advantages do they have as opposed to a semi automatic traditional rifle?
It's basically a rifle like any other semiauto. The advantage of an AR is the custom options are endless.
3. Did you build your rifle or buy it complete?
I have built one (in .22lr) but bought most of the others as complete packages or completed uppers or lowers.
4. What caliber did you purchase and why?
.556NATO and .223Wylde for convenience, .22lr as a wife/kids learning rifle.
5. Is the SW sport 2 Magpul MOE M-LOK a decent firearm?
No idea. Magpul overall builds decent products.

I had the missus fire my 10 ga. once, I told her it didn't have much recoil.

1. Why did I buy? Just to be like everyone else, to some extent. And because if there are darned few 5 rd mags there a plenty of 10s.
2. Advantages: are any and every caliber besides .223 which is for barrel-burning and learning to shoot by volume vs by aiming. There are other suitable varmint calibers in 2nd thru 9th place behind .223/5.56, so hardly an essential caliber. Cheap ammo if round count is a priority, but is otherwise an oxymoron IMHO." Bang, bang, bang! You're sprayed." :p
3. I bought Stag and Rem/DPMS guns in .223 and .30 AR, added .25-45 SRC and 350 Legend uppers. 'Building' is 95% 'assembling', like with tinkertoys, legos, or Lincoln logs. I build accurate ammo, not guns from kits.
4. Calibers explained above. IMO too many popular AR calibers are under-appreciated in bolt guns. (.223/5.56, 7.62x39, 350 Legend. .300 BO, 6.5 Grendel, etc)
5. Friend brought over a M&P Sport .22 and Ruger DI AR-15. He had his share of poor cycling with the .22 just as was reported online, and to him the Ruger shamed it as far as fit and finish. That said, and after culling one RF load it didn't like, we agreed the S&W is a perfectly fine piece. I'm sure you'd be happy shooting one.

btw, I have Handi Rifles in .23, .243, .280 Rem, and .45-70. If all my repeaters were forfeit, I wouldn't feel under-gunned for hunts I'm considering.
