I'm just like atsah, I've wondered the same thing. My neighbor is really into guns and has loads, several ARs also. He set up a range, shoots all the time. I took my .243 Ruger bolt action over, zeroed in the scope and put a few bullets through the target center dot. I can't understand or see sense in repetitive shooting. Once it's dialed in that's it. Just my opinion.
It would be so boring and costly...bang,bang,bang...50-100 rounds!

Target shooting is a great sport and pastime...the price of .223 and 5.56 ammo make it relatively cheap for playing...much less than standard hunting rounds like 30-06, .270, .35 or even 30-30's...check out the ballistics of the .22wmr and check the local prices...the cost has come down...another thing about .22 WMR's is they are available in a variety of projectile weights and styles...

Shooting is like golf, or bowling. There is always a better result to be obtained, If you pay Attention.

For some of us it is a competition with self. The art of self control. How are all your motor skills at different distances?
I was escort officer for the shooting team from Uruguay. Ft. Benning sponsored the military equivalent of the shooting Olympics. The daughter of the Colonel in charge of this match was a Gold medalist small bore Olympic shooter. It was my first exposure to a new shooting world that I never knew existed aside from my pistol and rifle quals.

Yep, you may not get it, it's ok many never will.
Not any more then why run a car in a left hand circle for 500 miles...lol:laughing:

I dont know anybody that has an ar that empties the mag All the ones we have are built by us. They can be extremely accurate and if you shop around fairly cheap to build.
In 5.56 cheap to shoot , 300 Blackout a hoot to shoot subsonic, 6.5 Grendel scary accurate, 458 Socom a real thumper, 9mm pistol now thats a toy.
Its all a matter of personal taste.

All I can say is, if you have one (or more), better enjoy it while you can. I can see them getting banned like bump stocks. No black guns with short tubes here. All bolt guns with long tubes and big bullets.

I have one. I like it because it is a cheap round just to go shooting with. Light weight. not too big and not too small
I bought mine complete.

I have friends that have several. I see no need for myself to have several, but what ever floats your boat.
Some spend their money fishing, some playing golf, some hunting, some racing, etc, they spend their money collecting guns

We got them for pigs, with EOtech red dot. A scope is wonderful till you have multiple targets moving. I like the red dot for that reason
I bought a M&P ready to go, and we absolutely fell in love with them. I have two 223-5.56 and two 6.8s all 16 inch barrels,, three I built, and each is different in some way.
Me and my son had fun building them.
Now his friends have them as well, they are bad addictive.. You can't have but one..
The M&P sport didn't have some features as the other M&P like a dust cover over the ejection port and it didn't have the forward assist so you could fully check the bolt is in full battery.
If you want one now is the time.

I bought the M&P Magpul edition in the Obama days. Always wanted an AR15 for the range and just to have in case the laws make it impossible to purchase one legally.

Mounted a 3x Burris scope... I think a good value. Then swapped out the butt and grips with desert tan upgrades to personalize it so it wasn't all-black and fit my paws better.

I only wanted one... don't need two or more of the basically the same. I liked the build/features of the MagPul vs. the Sport. Barrel, dust cover and the branding.

The relatively cheap ammo makes it far less expensive to play with vs. a larger caliber hunting rifle. Not much of a hunter anyways especially anymore.

We prefer Ar over our big bore sporting rifles for hogs. Replacement barrels are much less expensive and barrels do wash. Endless accessories make it inexpensive to customize. We have shooting sticks, dot scopes, thermal image scopes, flashlights and a flash/sound suppressor (all are not used at same time :) ) I wouldn't attempt putting those on my big bores (if it's even possible, cost would be unreasonable).

When I served in the Army, I carried an M-4. It’s a rugged, reliable, easy to use & easy to clean rifle. I own 4 AR’s that I built. All custom, all billet with stainless barrels. One is chambered in .223 Wilde (which can also shoot 5.56), another in .458 Socom, the other chambered in 7.62/.308, and my favorite one is a totally custom gas piston design chambered in .17 WSM, the king of rim fire. ;)

I also have various bolt actions in different calibers, which I also really enjoy to shoot. But my go to rifle which is night stand ready is my .223 ArmaLite rifle. Ya can’t go wrong with one.
