Russell.....do you know if it will harm anything if it is stuck?

It will do harm. When I first thought my diff lock was "locked", I simply found some nice wet, slippery ground and noticed rather quickly in 2wd that the wheels were turning independently. Now, I don't worry.

It will be REAL obvious if the diff lock is stuck on. It will not want to turn very well. The first thing you will notice is the front wheels will want to slide as the rear wheels push the tractor in a straight line. This will be very noticeable. If you have not experienced anything like that then the diff lock is not stuck. If it was broken it would be more likely to not engage than to stay engaged.

Get on a dirt road or some similar surface, then make a sharp right or left u-turn (doesn't have to be fast, just sharp). If the inside rear wheel absolutely shreds the surface OR the front wheels slide badly, then the diff lock is on. If the inside and outside wheels rough up the surface equally, then it's off.

If you aren't sure, try it with the lock off and then on. I'm sure you'll notice a difference.

makes turning fairly interesting, not real good for the tyres or drive line. loads them up a lot, that for sure. to find out if its stuck, put machine on level ground, put it in 2wd. make sure its in neutral and the brake is off. (chock the front wheels) now jack up one back wheel and try to turn it. if it turns your ok. if not then you have an issue.

Or just crank up your tractor, with it in 2wd, diff lock disengaged, cramp the front wheels and turn as short as possible. If it scuffs, spins, bucks like it doesn't want to turn, the rear is locked. If it makes the turn easily, nothing is wrong. If the diff is locked, take it back to the dealer for warranty work because something is wrong. If not, don't worry about it.

BTW and FYI, for those of you who do not own B series Kubotas, the diff lock is a spring loaded pedal in the rear center of the deck. It only engages if you are pressing the pedal down. If you let up on it, the lock automatcially disengages if it is functioning properly.

Certainly it is possible to step on it and it remain engaged, but this is clearly a malfunction, whether the pedal comes back or not.

The pedal is not 'set' .. you are either locked via foot pressure or you're diff is not locked and spooling freely.

Dos centavos....

not always. if there is load on the diff lock it will stay engaged until the load comes off it, do this by either stopping, giving the brakes a good hand bang (this equalises the force on both axles and thus the diff lock can come back out) or by turning a bit one way then the other.

I just want to post a little more information so an inexperienced member won’t get all over their dealer or think that their differential lock is broken is it isn’t. A lot of manuals will tell the operator to tap the brake on one side and then tap the brake on the other side if the pedal doesn't come up when your foot is removed from the pedal. The reason for them saying this is because of the binding that can occur even with a correctly operating differential lock. Binding can keep the teeth disengaged even if the pedal is up. The lock may stay locked-in if the tractor is turning or if it is a position where one wheel has more traction than the other. The tractor needs to be rolling straight so that equal pressure will be on both wheels.
