Are Fram oil filters good?

My local Napa has two large oil filters on display, one is a Fram Extra Guard. The cheap construction really stands out. I can get the Fram filter for my Cummins Dodge for $2.99 at Auto Zone, I figure the wholesale cost is not much. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

One thing I noticed is they sell a few filters that cross each other... For instance.. for my old fords ( 9n, 2n, 8n, NAA ).. you can use a fram C3 or C3P.( cartridge filter inserts ). c3 is about 5$ c3p is 8$.. if you look at them, there is 75% more filter media in the c3p... the c3 is a metal shell with one layer of media,.. virtually hollow.and a strainer mesh cover on the outside.. whereas the c3p is stacked filter media that nearly makes it to the inside diameter of the in/out holes on the cartridge... go figure.
