Are kids getting dumber?

A few hundred dollars a month? Why don't you try $250 a week for two kids!! I work 50 to 60 hours a week, my wife works 40 hours a week and goes to graduate school. My kids are not allowed to watch TV except in very small doses on the weekends. We tell our teachers and our care givers what kind of behavior we excpect from our kids. We always made it a point to pick up our kids when they were younger at day care at very incosistant hours, sometimes they where only there for 15 minutes. I judged the day cares by how all the children where treated, not just ours. We went thru 6 before we found one we liked. My kids do very well in school and they are ALWAYS the best behaved 5 and 8 year old children when in a group of piers. I have talks with my children about smoking, drinking, drugs and broken homes, so does my wife. We always put them first and while we work a lot we spend a lot of meaningful time with them. Not idle quite time or put them in front of a TV. We do not have ANY video games in the house, even though I love them.

We have many families in our small town that have stay at home mothers, the MAJORITY of these families are not better off than ours. We BOTH talk to our children and work with them and could interchange at any time. If my wife was home when I was I would be outside building something or cutting wood instead of taking care and interacting with my kids

I believe the most important thing people need to do is take responsibility for there parenting and not blame it on other people, society or TV. You must also react quickly when you see problems, I too often meet people who don't. Hind site is useless.

The Kids Today:

I recall reading something someone said about todays kids. The content had something to do with no respect for their elders or work ethic etc. I beleive it was Socrates or someone of about his time made the statements.

All I know is both my progeny are better educated and a whole pile sharper than I am.

Been married for 31 years this year. Both my wife and I have worked the entire time. Got three fine, well adjusted kids. All attended public schools. We never had a plan about raising the kids...it just seemed to go OK. Relax, don't worry.

I have always got along with kids as long as they understood two words STOP and NO. I have a wife who taught for 34 years. I have no children of my own, but I have young adults who listen when they ask for advice. I agree that so many today are always looking to blame someone or something else for whatever happens. I like kids but I don't like brats.

Not all kids..just a few bad apples.
Todays bad apples have way to much time on there hands,and the wood shed door seems to be lock.
One should also look at some bad apple adults,for the change a young teenager way of thinking.

Yesterday the 2 teenagers which murder the 2 Dartmouth College Prof's about a year ago,one teenager said there plan was to rob at least 5 homes and kill someone.
The teenagers that day had rob 2 home and try to murder older man,the older man wouldn't let the 2 teenager into the house and the kids took off,but the next house they rob the Darthmouth College Prof's weren't so lucky.
I feel it does start at home..education,respect,caring,trust,love etc.. for today kids,also they should be aware if you screw up you will do the time.
Off the record..those 3 teenager should have there @sses kick over there heads,and given many hours of work..and I don't mean at a mall.

Okay enough..before I get somewhat /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif about people who don't show repsect.

PTRich, sounds like you're a great example of how day care should be used. Unfortunately, there are probably not enough parents out there like you.

Day care is being abused as an excuse/crutch for people not raising their own children. Plus the point of discipline...somewhere along the lines the second part of, "spare the rod, spoil the child", was dropped.

What about the kids that are better off in daycare? Those are the little buggers I feel bad for. Our tax dollars are buying kids breakfast because their parents won't crawl their lazy doped up and hung over'ed asses out of the sack and feed them. I know a few people like this and the scary part is when they finally get up they go to work at a daycare and watch other people's kids.

In the news this morning, two 13 year olds about an hour North of here. Decided to skip school for the day. Burglarized 8 homes, did $75,000.00 worth of vandalism and lit 3 of them on fire.

So, if they are not getting dumber, are they getting more evil?
If they are getting dumber, then why? Parents, society? I understand the the US is not the only country to be enjoying troubled youth. Is youth crime more of a problem today (more and larger crimes) than it was in say 1953? Is it time to be scared yet?

One thing in this topic that REALLY ticked me off about the previous administration. "It takes a village to raise a child." BULLS$%T. It takes PARENTS. By and large it takes 2 parents. A decent village (i.e., the right place) helps but letting the village do it means it is someone elses responsibility. I boiled everytime that wench said the phrase. How the hell did NYC elect her?

I know exactly what you mean! I felt exactly the same way about darn near everything Reagan, the first Bush and now the current Bush said/say! I figure the blood pressure swings are good for clearing out my clogged arteries. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
