Are there any JD 5400 Loader/Backhoe owners out there?

You need to connect the yellow male tip to the female for proper flow to the rockshaft. If your present turf tires are 16.9X30, you can get ag tires to fit the same rims. Firestone can supply them as well as others. Firestone Agricultural Tire Division . You might check with local dealers for left over tires from swapping around tires. Sometimes you can find a bargain.

Oh, I forgot the tires...

I have two rear turf tires... no good for me. I need Ag tires.

This is for light ranch use. My tractor is a 2WD. The specified tire size is 16.9-30.

Where can I get a really good price to value deal on tires like this? Keep in mind I'm interested in more traction; the rest isn't too important for me since it is light ranch work on weekends.

Any recommendations on good price to value?

Also, can I put other widths instead of 16.9? More options would allow me to get a better price maybe.

You have not just turf tires, but Golf Course Specials. They are designed for minimum traction for minimum damage when mowing. So for your use agree they are the first thing to change.

I have no also entered the nightmare of installing a 3PH.

I can't even figure out if this is a Cat 1 or Cat 2 hitch!

I thought adding a 3PH was a simple thing... JD wants about $2000 for all the parts I think. But I find 3PH kits online for a few hundred bucks. Why such a big difference? Are the online kits not any good? There's no way I can pay 2K to add this.

Completely confused and bummed out. Help please... :-(

The 5400 came with a Category 2 hitch, but could be converted to Category 1 as shown in attachments.

OEM should be CAT II. Unless you (orginal owner) purchased the optional CAT I hardware from Deere.

Yup... there are those incredulous moments of "sticker shock" when pricing even the most basic "chunks of iron" - like 3pt hardware.

Check around for a tractor salvage yard or somebody with an older machine that's growing weeds in the back tree lot! The dimensions and configuration of the 3pt hardware hasn't changed dramatically in the past 10 years (maybe more) so, I'd research what you need vs what you might find on the older, utility tractors.

You might be able to adapt the hardware from say; a 40's or 50's series of utility tractor to your 5400. Do some digging!

For parts try T and H Salvage in Pavo, GA for parts. If you hook the wrong hoses on the tractor together you won’t be able to crank it. The starter will not be able to overcome the hydraulic pressure. I have a 5300 with a 10A backhoe.
The three point hitch comes as Cat 2. You can buy Cat 1 balls for the lower arms from John Deere.

You stated it will be mainly used to pull a box scraper. What else will you use it for? Depending on your use forget the three point hitch and use pull type implements. A pull type box blade will do a much better job than one on the 3pth. Mower, disk, rakes, all kind of implements can be had in pull type style.
