Are Thoroughbred Horses Getting Longer?

Breeding specific traits into animals has been going on a long time, sometimes openly and sometimes secretly, like car companies treat the next year car models. Here's an example of a horse bred for the race track...

Here's one that's supposedly being breed for apartment dwellers where space is at a premium...

We've all heard of sea horses of course.

and horse flies...

Regardless of what specific type of horse they are, I think we can all agree that they are a handsome beast and deserve to be pictured in a place of honour on our living room wall.

Watched the Kentucky Derby yesterday. As the horses were walked past the camera going into the start gates, I noticed how long, lean and tucked up their torsos looked compared to the obviously powerful hind quarters.

I don't pay much attention to horses, but have they changed through breeding over the years to be longer in the middle?

It was a great race to watch.

Probably a dumb question, but it made me curious.

If you like horses you might like to keep your eye on this one. Black Caviar has won 13 races in a row here in Australia (the most recent was last Saturday) and is currently rated the best sprinter in the world.

She has a bit of US blood.

It was a rainy and gloomy day, a good day for a movie.

I watched the 2010 Disney movie 'Secretariat'. It's a good movie and a great story about horse racing with some good underlying themes based around needing to go out and run your own race, as a metaphor for life in general.

Not sure how closely to the true story they hewed, but it was entertaining and a good use of a rainy afternoon

Very kid friendly.
