Chim,

And the cab sides are sloped to help deflect incoming small arms fire, right?

I feel so alone and vulnerable in my straight sided cab.

No, it makes it stealth so he doesn't have to worry about small arms fire.

Thank you for the explanation.

I still feel alone and vulnerable, but it helps some to understand why. Maybe if I start wearing my camo underwear and socks . . .

Are open station guys are more macho and brave?

I have an open station JD 4720 which I've used and am very satisfied with, for a number of years. About 80% of the time, I was completely happy with the open station, the exceptions being snow removal and the rare occasion when I had to work in the rain.

I ran across the proverbial "deal too good to pass up" on a used deluxe cab 5115M, so I made the purchase with the intent of selling the 4720 when I'm home and have time to meet with and answer questions for prospective purchasers. My last trip home, while trying to play catch up on work around the property, I found I used the smaller open station more than the larger cabbed tractor.

Admittedly, the weather was nice, and the work was mostly lightweight in nature. My property is heavily wooded, and the plan is to eventually thin it out, harvesting some very nice hardwood in the process. The 5115 has a grapple which I will be using heavily during the clearing process, and was one of the primary reasons for the purchase.

Don't get me wrong. Even though I've only gotten minimal use of the cab, it is very nice and I can see myself becoming spoiled once I have a bit more time to truly appreciate it. Now I'm trying to do the old justification in my head and find a way to keep both tractors.

Obviously, because you weenies dont want to be in the cold, in the heat, in the dust, exposed to hives of deadly stinging insects, and you have to have your music to divert yourself from even thinking about doing hard work.

We are tougher, more resliiant, brave, tough and focused on what we do...true Americans driving our Japanese, Korean, and Indian made machines.

That just sounds *so* manly and brave. When snow season is over, I'll break all the windows out of my cab so I can be like you guys. 'Till then, I'll keep a cup full of dirt in the drink holder and throw some into the air now and then, and on my face of course so I can pretend to be tough. Yeah, that should ought'a do it. Oh, and I'll stop telling girls I have a cab. That pick-up line never worked for me anyway.

Thank you so much for pointing out my glaring inadequacies - - this forum is just great :^)

Anyone want to trade an open station (age and value doesn't matter) for an almost new B3350? It'll save me the work of breaking the windows.

I have a wasp nest I can send you! That should lend some authenticity to your pseudo open station experience.

I'm much larger at the hips than I am at the shoulders and I was trying to save money on material. The glass is only regular automotive safety glass, so it falls a tad short of an NIJ IV rating. It did safely deflect several leaves yesterday when I was mowing.

Yes, I am a weenie - put the doors on for the upcoming season before I mowed yesterday. I gave up on trying to appear manly in the interest of comfort:)

Thank you. The cab has 6 points where it connects to the tractor. Two bolts go through the existing holes in the rear fenders and don't do much of anything. There are two angle clips that take the weight of the rear and transfer it to the ROPS, with 2 socket head screws to keep them in position. On the front, the steel for the joystick seemed like it was made for the support, so I used that on the right side and made a mirror image bracket for the left side (shown in first picture below).

Since the sides of the cab are outboard of the fenders, the floor is enlarged on both sides with steel tube trapezoid-shaped sections. Flooring is made from a cow mat. The cab was ready for the snow that never came the winter before last.

It was removed for Summer 2013, but has been on continuously since Fall 2013. Doors were lifted off for this past Summer, and reinstalled this afternoon. The flexible material below the windshield in the pics below was replaced with Lexan recently.

Here's a link to a long-winded description of the build:

Thanks Chim. What a terrific build this was. I marvel at people such as yourself who simply can look at a problem and see the solution to fabricate just what is called for. Although a better brain than I have would be able to extrapolate your procedures to more substantial build material such as schedule 40 pipe which I believe is at least what I need, I still appreciate seeing what others are capable of even though I am not the best inductive reasoner around. Thanks again.
