I don't think that any manufacturer sets out to make junk. Designing something better is relatively easy compared with getting it made properly. Again, it's not because anyone wants it to fail, it's just that working repeatedly to close tolerances in mass production - what we call quality control - takes a while to accomplish. It takes time and experience....along with enough profit to justify the expense of moving toward better quality.
And eventually you end up with a good dependable product being produced by what we call a "mature industry". It takes time in the game to make all that happen. That's part of why older brands should be better - not that they always are, and why younger ones are rarely as reliable - although they are often better in concept.
