Are You a Redneck or just the opposite?

I always tell people I come from fine Redneck stock. It's a little hard to be a true redneck when you work in a strip mall selling high end fitness equipment instead of toiling each day in the Sun like my uncles and grandfather in the fields. But, I do a good job pretending on my days OFF.

That's a derogatory name people call working class white men, the caucasian equivalent of ni***r. It refers to the color of the back of your neck after working a day in the sun. They assume that if you work with your hands, you are too stupid to do anything else. Somebody wants to call me a redneck, I'm going to teach them some manners.

What's the real definition now?
Since people seem to be proud to be a redneck -
Proud to be poor and going to stay that way?
Proud to be ignorant and defend you don't have a need to know?
or
Proud to be hard working in the sun?
Proud to know your not the smartest one but trying hard to become one?

The portrayal of "rednecks" by comedians seems to show it as a derogratory term.

From the Wicki it seems that the root of the word comes from

Really?! What started as(I think) a tongue in cheek thread, you try to turn into a 'serious' crusade... Good grief, lighten up and laugh a little.

You might be a redneck if you think redneck is a real put-down.

I'm a redneck but I have all my teeth.

I'm a redneck but I own jackstands.

I have a holster for my Coors Light bottle, a smushed cowboy hat, two jacked up 4x4's and a house full of guns. But I am also a pretty literate dude and drive a Cadillac.

For my part in your quoted section I apologize IF it offends you, who puts in their place as in New York.
I was attempting to discern what the TBN "community" was defining as "Redneck".
I am ATTEMPTING to NOT become a "Redneck", if the term is dependent on the color of the nape of my neck.
I try to wear a hat that covers my neck in the Mississippi sun.

Ken (Sweet) tends to start threads with meaning.
Example:
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/rural-living/204281-i-did-survey-yesterday.html

As a Northener transitioning to a Southerner it's important to me to try and find out what Southerners find pride in.
Many of the people I know and associate with in Mississippi have Doctor as their first name and their eduacation levels and incomes match. So when getting around the barbecue on the weekend SWMBO and I tend to associate with people that do not meet most of the criteria previously listed.
However they do meet these:
The receptionist checks the rat traps at your place of business.
Your local ambulance has a trailer hitch.
Your boat has not left the driveway in 15 years.

I wouldn't want to label myself as a "redneck" if the community thought it meant ignorant and not trying to learn, or poor and looking to live on the dole. And some of the people I have to deal with in Misissippi are that way.

But if it means "I worked hard, learned hard, and am trying for more, with ethics and fairness for all" I'd be proud to be a redneck.

If Ken meant this as a "tongue in cheek" thread he should have added a smily :)

I don't think I'm a redneck, so I guess I have to own whatever comes with that.

Beyond funning around, the problem with Ken's question is that it is based on a false premise: there is no opposite to being a redneck.

Where I grew up, "hillbilly" was not a compliment, and it's possible "redneck" is the same. I think both have been a bit romanticized with the passing of time. I would be hard put to identify people here as "yankees" or their opposite.

Agree completely and I know of no universally accepted definition. We have a lot of "posers" around based on their idealized perception of the term.
