Vacation get away..........maybe not, that's a pretty tough spot in the world. And for a little perspective The Ranch is a little more than 835 SQUARE MILES!!

The first time I took my wife with me for a catering to the Y O Ranch(another Texas Large one) down in Mountain Home, Tx the girl from NYC was a more than little amazed.

We had loaded the Suburban and driven 6 hours or so out of Dallas and are way out in the Hill Country and she asks "When are we going to get there?" I answer with my usual "Heah, we're getting closer."

Now we are on a Texas Rural Hwy coming out of Harper, Tx and we cross I-20.....Same Question & Answer.

We finally get to the huge YO sign that's on the hwy and she says "Well we're here."........."Ah, not quite it's still another couple of miles off the hwy to the gate."

Finally get to the gate and I get out of the truck and use the phone at the gate to call HQ for the combination to the gate.

Open the gate and continue the drive on a really rough Ranch Road, and she says "Finally we're here." "Well not really............. it's 7 more miles the HQ and Chuck Wagon."

We did finally "Get there" but it did take here a little while to get her mind around how big some of these Ranches are.

I would probably buy it but I would probably need a bigger tractor, which is not in the budget right now.

The 30-40 acres of my lot that I actually do something with are all the land that I can 'enjoy' as it is. But, if I had the where-with-all it would be danged cool to preserve or rebuild large habitat areas for environmental reasons. That would float my boat.

The ranch web site lists 535,000 acres, so the sales price works out to $1355/acre. Do you think the mineral rights are included in the sales price? My uninformed guess is that they are not included.

That's a good way to put it in perspective.

It really is hard for me to think, and really picture, just how much land that is. :confused3:

I was stationed at Altus AFB just across the state line in Okla from Vernon.....they can keep all that desolation. They need that much land to feed the cows on it ....maybe 3 sq miles per head (no idea) ... not enough vegetation for me.
