Maybe I am FOS, and maybe his van did not come from Chrysler with a spare tire. Darn shame. I would be getting one.

My Smart car didn稚 come with a spare either, but then where on earth would you put it?

The model year that is one year newer than my diesel got the new emissions system. They deleted the spare in order to make room for the DEF tank and made it standard with run flats.

I have owned 2 different vehicles that came with a flat fix kit consisting of a can of goop and an air pump. First was a 2003 Corvette Z06. Second was a 2013 Mustang GT. I wouldn't consider either a cheap or economy model car.

My 2014 Malibu came with the same. I wish I had paid closer attention, I would have pulled the spare out of the Chevy I was trading in. Bolt pattern and tire size was the same.

6 months ago, I checked the spare on my 1999 Silverado 2500.
It had never been used, and would not hold air due to side wall cracking.

I went to a guy I know, he had a nice take-off,, $25 mounted, balanced, and guaranteed to hold air.

This made me pause and think - when did I last need to change a flat tire? It was many, many years ago - I too have full size spares that may be useless as they haven't been touched for more than a decade.

Yet I recall in my younger days it was a common occurrence - on every type of vehicle I drove. Has tire technology improved that much or do our roads have a lot less hazards or am I just more attentive to slow leaks and replacing worn tires?

I can't imagine not having a spare - and I like full size spares - but maybe they are no longer more necessary than a myriad of other parts that could fail.

I too used to say that,, but, our vehicle of choice is Honda.
The last two new Honda's came with truly junk tires,,,

Luckily, the 2014 Accord blew a tire on the interstate,
the nice guy in the DOT truck pulled up, and changed the flat, no charge.

We took the Accord to Sams Club, and purchased 4 new Michelin tires.

Now, the 2016 CR-V is getting a few miles on it,,,
I wonder when a tire on it will go?? :confused2:

Tires have improved. But not enough for me to be comfortable not having a spare. I had to buy one for my Golf R. It has the space for a spare. The regular Golf and Gti have one but they left it off the R. Most likely to get the weight down.
