I know, I've had some BBQ "Poor Man's Pig" (but not on my dinner table in my house)

But being a microbiologist, I don't like the fact they are the only creatures known that harbor Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent for Leprosy..... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Almost lost a good arrow and about killed myself to retrieve it. I was using a blunt "thumper" point and only got about 1"-2" penetration. Hit him at the base of the tail and he ran off with that arrow sticking up like an antenna on a remote controlled critter. Luckily, the fletching hung on some vines and pulled free. I'll not shoot another one with my bow again unless I'm shooting a broadhead or a field point AND I'm shooting from a tree at a high angle so it'll pin him to the ground! I ain't chasing another one to retrieve my arrow.

Back in the late eighties when I was still in high school I lived in the country just outside of Junction, TX. We had 'dillos galore. I used to live for deer season and I had a pet handload for my .30-'06 that used a 150 grn. spitzer boattail running very hot. It was certain death to whitetails.

Well, as anyone will tell you a high school age boy isn't always the sharpest thinker. One late summer afternoon I looked out in our 2 acre front lawn and about 75 yards out was a big armadillo. It seemed like a perfect target and I had never shot one with anything bigger than a .410. So I set up on the front porch, put the crosshairs right on the poor bugger and touched off a round. Two things happened...1) the armadillo just sort of blew up. It absorbed almost all of the energy and there was not much need for a shovel to carry him off. I just found a few pieces and some blood. 2) my folks front porch was rock on the sides and had a large concrete patio that did nothing to absorb the sound. I lost my hearing for a few minutes and the ringing lasted for many hours. Pure stupidity on my part. I had never had such pain in my ears before or since.

We never made much of a dent in the population, but it was fun to shoot them. When wounded they do not care where they are running, they just run all out. Armadillos will bounce off of a rock wall when they hit it at a full run.

LOL Rick, I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple of years ago.

I shot an armadillo during the day and he managed to get away to his burrow at the base of a large live oak. I looked down the burrow and saw he was stuck half way down the burrow (his rear was in full view). So I stepped aside from the tree trunk and stuck the barrel of my Browning Hi-Power into the hole and pulled the trigger......

Well, the muzzle blast coming out of that hole from the 9mm+P round was ungodly as were the chunks of armadillo! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It was a real good thing I at least decided to step aside from the hole because my eardrums were almost both ruptured and my handgun and arm were totally covered with fresh armadillo pieces. The concussion from that muzzle blast was worse than from my 7mm Rem Mag..... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
