Ash from Woodstove

This is the first year I have had a wood stove burning mostly oak. I have been putting the ashes on my garden spot. Does this sound like a good thing that will help build the soil? Is there any other thoughts that I need to consider? Gardening time is soon approching. Thanks for any advice.

About this time of year I cut up potatoes and throw then in ashes a week before I plant them. Tomatoes like the ashes mixed in the soil also, just don't over do it. It will raise the PH of your soil a little.

We use ashes in our garden extensively, but here in New England we have pretty acidic soil. Just don't use it on acid-loving plants like blueberries, roses, azeleas, etc.

In addition to the increase in pH, the ash contains allot of ingoranic ions and trace metals that are required for plant enzymatic processess to operate correctly, so it is an excellent additive, just watch out with too much of a good thing!
