Since a loader is a $3000 and up item, and since most CUTS are bought with one, and whereas loaders require very frequent lubrication, would it be totally out of line to suggest that manufacturers should include some kind of clamp or receptacle on the loader or the tractor to hold a grease gun at the ready? I know I could make one, but it would seem a simple thing to have such built onto the machine in the first place, and it would look much better. I would also suggest a fire extinguisher somewhere on the machine, just in case one should need it. The little toolboxes aren't good for much of anything except a few pins and such.

And while I'm ranting, some attention should be put into the fact that people use these machines in the winter. I am in constant dread of falling while near the tractor and landing on any number of sharp edges and protruding stuff that, with a little thought could be rounded off and dulled a little without loss of function..

The fire extinguisher is a good idea, the grease gun bracket, I would have no use for. My tractor is never more than a few hundred yards from the house/shop, and I would not want it hanging on the tractor as something to scrape off in the woods. I just drive up under the shade tree and grease the loader and go on. Everyone's circumstances are not the same, and if you want a grease gun bracket, well, there is not much stopping you putting one on.

Like you when I get off and on the tractor on ice or snow, I tread very carefully to prevent knocking my teeth out by a slip and fall. It can happen.

Its something that is needed only occasionally so just leave it in shop.

how do you mount a air grease gun?

Auto grease would be cool!

Having had a close call with a nest of some sort (bird, mice, ??) on top of the valve cover right against the exhaust / muffler / turbo, I now carry a small extinguisher that fits the oversize cup holder. Probably inadequate for most fires but I feel better about it anyway. I have seen bigger ones mounted to ROPS and other equipment like hay balers, ect.

As for grease guns, on our old tractor I kept one hanging on the loader with a short loop of rope and a carabiner. I keep one now with the handle stuck down into the stake pocket of my truck bed. I like having them out where I can see them, it's an easy reminder to grease everything.

I also built a open top tool tray with mesh bottom for the fender to add a place for pliers, gloves, phone, water bottles or whatever.

How about just centralized grease points? That's what I'd really like. One or two banks of fittings on either side of the machine.

More lines to break and get in the way.

Just grease it and move on. Ever greased a combine, howly cow is there a lot of a gease zeks!

naaa. not needed. You only need to grease a loader after 8 hours of ITS use... not tractors use. Alot of times im just driving around moving stuff, dragging trees, chipping trees, etc..not using the loader at all. In reality i could go quite some time between greasing. I do know if you grease it too much, you get TONS of grease dripping out of the thing getting all over everything.

Sometimes i really regret switching to the red grease. that stuff is a mess. I dont remember ever having that much crap to clean up from my old lubes.

Well I installed a grease gun holder and a fire extinguisher holder under the flip up seat on my L35TLB and also a fender toolbox for wrenches, rags ets. Saves a lot of shoe leather if I need it when at the far end of the 7 acres. LOL

Most OEM tool boxes on compact tractors are barely big enough for a pair of gloves, some insect repellent (in the south here) and few extra pins and clips etc...the grease gun is in the "tractor support" box that is never too far away...

...I have a habit of leaving my loader bucket sitting on the heel...can't count the times I've caught my foot on one of the tooth bar teeth...

I've always carried a fire extinguisher in my daily driver and I bought one specifically when I got the tractor but 5 years later I have still not made a bolt around the ROPS bracket...need to do that and make a cup/water bottle holder at the same time...it's always something...

I agree with that from one old fart to another!!

If you think a combine has a lot, try greasing a cotton picker. IIRC each row has like 42 spindle bars and they take not just a few shots of grease but more like 50 per bar. You don't grease them with a hand grease gun, you use one that holds 5 gallons and each pump puts out triple or more than an hand gun. And after you finish greasing the spindle bars, you have to shoot grease into the chains that turn all that stuff. This has to be done with the picker head turning, so careful you don't get hung up anywhere. 5 gallons of grease lasts about 2 days on a 2 row picker. I couldn't imagine greasing up a 6 row unit like they have today with a hand grease gun.

Does anybody use a battery-powered grease gun? I thought about getting one but the manual gun works fine for the 10 fittings on my loader.

HillStreet -
Your post reminds me of a funny story. Neighbor bought a new combine a few years ago and got a battery powered grease gun at the same time. Since he bought grease in 35gal drums - he mod'ed the gun to run off the drum and at the same time put long leads on the gun so it could be clipped to the unit he's greasing and run off its batteries. You guessed it - somehow he screwed up the electrical part of his mod's and the grease gun would not turn off. I guess he finally figured out that he better disconnect the battery clips - but not until the grease gun "had its day". He shared this story with me a couple years ago when we were splitting a six pack.

I just bought the Milwaukee 12v... have not used it yet though. I'm sick of hand greasing and I've never have liked any of the grease guns I own.

To me a grease gun on the tractor would be unnecessary and a pain, unless you were operating it far away without returning nightly to a shed/barn/garage/etc. Grease guns tend to collect dirt outside too.

i could see a cordless grease gun in a service garage operation or for units as described above that need LOTS of grease. but at most each grease zerk only needs 1 or 2 squeezes. any more and it just goos out all over.

maybe when i get arthritis ill get one
