I have a second hand DR PTO chipper. Can't find the nameplate, but it looks like an older version of their 475, with a small hopper and low eject port. It broke last weekend on a sweetgum trunk just under the max size. Now it rattles like it's coming apart when I feed wood. In the garage I found that I can move the drive belt by hand and see the flywheel move in the eject port. But when I stop the drive belt, the flywheel keeps moving. So I guess a setscrew has come loose or maybe a key has sheared on the upper driveshaft.

So here's the problem. I got all the screws out, but the rear face plate does not come off. It rocks around the pillow block for the upper driveshaft. It looks like there is a collar on the end of the driveshaft that goes under the grease seal. I got the snap ring and both setscrews off, but the collar will not come off. I don't see anything for a puller to grab. I've tapped it with a hammer but do not want to drive it further in. I tried getting behind the collar to pry it out, and just bent the grease seal.

Any ideas how to get this thing off the upper driveshaft? Are there more setscrews inside the pillow block? I don't see how to get that off without getting the faceplate off first because the hex heads are inside the machine.

Why don’t you call DR and get the manual?
Good idea. The Owner's Manual posted online tells how to sharpen the blade but does not go much deeper. The exploded diagram is not detailed enough for this problem. My part is #6. It doesn't really show the thickness of the piece or how many setscrews it has.

I think I'm asking more generally what an experienced mechanic would do - heat, hammer, grind it off, or what?

Could it be a concentric locking collar?

Give it a tap with a hammer and punch in the opposite direction of the shaft rotation and see what happens.

I never heard of that kind of hardware before. But no, it's not a concentric lock. Thanks for the new term, though.

Got it. The "stuck" piece is not a shaft collar at all. It is the core of the pillow block bearing, and goes all the way through the bearing.

I fished an open end wrench through the inspection port and onto the heads of the bolts holding the pillow block in place, got the nuts off, and got a pry bar behind the pillow block. The whole thing came out with minimal swearing. Thanks again to the group.
