We have more single car accidents now than during the winter, on the I 94 by Ann Arbor.

An it's not just texting, even though that is what they seem to only want to focus on.

What about fast food, playing with the radio knob, yelling at the kids in the back seat, reading a billboard, OR ANYTHING that causes you to take your eyes off the road or a hand off the wheel.

Fact is, there are already laws in place for "distracted driving". And it up to the descreation of the officer. It is a judgment call for them If you were being a danger to you/others they can cite you.

All they have done now is make it harder to enforce. Because it you issue a ticket for texting, now it is no longer a judgment call, they actuall have to prove you were texting. And the time and money spent to prove it costs way more than a $100 fine is going to pay.

They are all issues, yes, somewhere I have a list of percentages for many of the items you list. A key factor is "Cognitive Capture". Texting takes more attention away than grabbing another handful of soon to be illegal french fries, just like blabbing on the phone with your wife about property taxes takes more focus than rambling on the cb about the girl next door.

Last winter while heading home from Boston a few flake few and put maybe an inch of snow onto the interstate. Talk about crazy drivers. I watched a girl in the southbound lane who had spun out on the slippery roads, hit a guard rail and her car sideways in the road with her rear bumper sticking about half way into the right lane. She was so busy texting and taking a picture of the back of her car she was walking about half way into the middle lane setting off a 5 car accident as the guy in the middle lane lost control trying to change into the left lane. He missed her by inches and I don't think she even noticed him until all the cars around her started making noises as they where hitting each other.

In about a 15 mile stretch of road I bet there was about 20 different accidents and most were 3 or more cars. Meanwhile as I drove (being from snow country I'm well versed in winter driving and have very good studded tires) I was doing about 30 mph (most of us were) and getting passed by people doing twice that speed in the right lane while passing people who were doing less than 10 in the left lane. 5 of the accidents I watched happened when one of those 70mph driver tried to occupy the same stretch of raod as the 10 mph drivers. I even watched one guy who felt that the faster you can go on slippery roads is better plowed through sever hundred yards of deep snow filled median only to plow head first into on coming traffic.

Neadless to say I will no longer drive in snowy conditions down there anymore. I guess I'm just turning into a chicken in my old age.

We don't have the snow problem here in the sunshine state, but the rain has it's own problems. We can get 2-3 inches in short order and consider it normal. Problem is, many of the idiots don't slow down in driving rain and cause others to have the accidents.

Another thing I have noticed - for some reason when people are stopped at the light, they are looking around at other cars or watching the light. Then when the light changes and they start moving, that is when they decide to light a smoke, check their makeup, look at a book or whatever.

Why not do some of those things when you are stopped?

This girl died of her injuries last week. :(

Lets hope her death can bring some good changes, maybe tougher laws on texting as well as adding how we teach our children (not that they are only the ones at fault here) in driver's ed. Little solace for her parents and others who loved her but some good is better than none.

You can't legislate I.Q.

The email that I received with these pics stated that the driver was a 22 year old male and that he fell asleep while driving.
