The bed where the spears are coming up is about eight feet from a south-facing brick wall. Maybe the heat from the wall is why that bed produces earlier than the other bed. However, last year the newer bed started producing within a few days of that older bed. This area is sometimes listed as zone 5 and sometimes as zone 6. I've planted some pecan trees that are not supposed to do well this far north, and last year I planted some muscadines! Hope springs eternal! We had lows at least down to -5 this winter, so if the muscadines made it they may be hardier than you sometimes read. I was just out checking them and if I squint real hard I think I can see some buds that seem to be swelling.
All my apple trees are leafing out, and I've got about 15 different varieties. The plums, cherries and peaches will be in bloom next week. Don't think I lost anything over the winter but one sweet cherry and one of the gooseberries....and maybe the muscadines.
