Thanks for the tips. I bought a cover to go over the valve today and I plan to add some smaller gravel. I used the rocks to hold it up until the city inspects. I may hammer an iron pipe into the ground and tie the hydrant to it.

You won't regret it. A lawn mower or tractor can take one out pretty quick.

Has the city looked at it ? In Illinois you have to put a double check in the line or use a tank type hydrant.

I couldn't see it in the picture, until I looked really close. Good for you. The one we use doesn't have a vent if installed below ground. Here it has to be servicable. That means without digging it up to work on it. That can be tricky.

The city approved the plumbing today.

The city installed the meter and connected my pipe yesterday. I blocked the end of the gasketed pipe run today. I placed 4 roughly 1'x1'x6" rocks at the end of the line, brought the line up with a 90, used another 90 to send it on toward the house, reduced to 1.5" pipe and installed a shutoff valve.

My plan is to slowly turn on the meter with the shutoff valve open to bleed the air and clean out the pipes. Then slowly close the shutoff valve while praying that the gasketed pipe stays together.

Does this sound right?

Here are a few pictures

STOP, where you are. If I am seeing correctly, that is a DWV 90 on that pipe. That is NOT designed for city water pressure. It is for drain and vent. A pressure 90 has a socket for gluing at least twice that deep. I think the reducer is also DWV but can't see it well enough to be sure. If it holds now it won't for long.

Thanks I will replace them!

The tracer wire is a good idea. You may be glad you used it some day.
