Assessor came by today

Right now, my property taxes are 9% to the County, 29% to the City, and the other 62% to the schools. And I reckon a larger percentage from others may go to the schools because my school taxes have been frozen for a few years (a small benefit of being old:laughing.

Maybe not. Just over 50% of our local school funding comes from the state, and the state gets the bulk of its money from income taxes. Some towns get more state funds, some less, depending on how much valuation they have for the number of students.

Just remember: "death and taxes" :laughing: you can't cheat either.

Hey, Mike, thanks for the invite to Australia! I already checked, and y'all require way too much money for me to come retire! I've actually been one time, R&R from 'Nam way back. Loved it! One other problem for an old American southerner too - I hear I couldn't have me guns there! That wouldn't work! We're fighting hard to keep them here.

You have to go underground, sell your SS# to some Nigerian scammer and drop out of the economy. Shred all records of your existence. Live in a shack in the middle of nowhere. Cash and barter only. That should work until your teeth fall out. :laughing:

Yeah, about those high dollar schools, near me is a middle school that I call the "castle" school! Man, you should see that thing! Now, having been a teacher, we need to have decent buildings - RIGHT - decent, not some CASTLE looking place that we taxpayers are funding! My wife has been inside the place, and she said it's castle looking inside too.

Only Castles? New schools now that's a full post if you lived in my town. Board of Education along with city politicians came up with a plan to build 2 new high schools. In all their infante wisdom they voted that only union company's could bid on the project basically blocking small local contractors from the work. (Great for local economy right) Well when the bids for the first school were open they were $ 9,000,000.00 ( 9 million ) over budget and they can't figure out why! So who pays for that I see my tax rate going up next year again.

When we lived in town, they were counting most of our garage as living space. We had a good reason to protest that, and it saved us several hundred dollars a year.

The pole barn description varies from county to county. I have a friend that checked with the regulators before construction. To qualify as a pole barn it had to be dirt or rock floor- NO concrete and had to have one side open. otherwise is was classed as some other structure and would be taxed at a higher rate.
