At Home In The Woods

OK, let me throw out some thoughts here. Worst case....

If nobody can make it to help unload the trailer, how much do you need to actually be able to live in the house???

1) You need the stuff for your daughter. That's in the camper.
2) You need a way to cook and eat. Dishes, etc. are in the camper... not sure about the stove. You could cook in the camper if you had to.
3) You need a place to sleep. Can you get to a bed to unload it? How about sleeping bags or blankets on the floor for a few days if it came to that? BTDT.
4) You need someplace to be able to sit down. Camp chairs?

Seems to me that you can still move into the house even if you can't get the trailer unloaded right away due to weather. You might not be as comfortable as you'ld like to be, but it should be easily doable.

Something I'm curious about here. Why the phone? Why not put the computer in the house and plug it in?

I agree the even if you do "a camp in" you will enjoy it.

We use to do it all the time when power was out.
All 4 kids and my wife and my self humkerd down in the living room playing card and board games.

If I couldn't unload today, I'd build a fire in the fireplace and sleep on the floor, right there. More snow coming Monday, so you might as well "get 'er done"....

Cyril,
I made last night's TBN post using my smart phone because I was in the camper, ready for bed.

Today the forecast called for 2 to 5 inches of snow, the day before we move. Fortunately we did not get the snow. There is still supposed to be more snow this evening. I really hope that our street is drivable tomorrow morning so our helpers can get here.

The phone company moved our phone/DSL internet line to the house this afternoon so we no longer have internet in the camper. I'm typing this post using my smart phone.

This evening we were able to get the storage trailer backed up near the garage. It was tight getting the trailer around the camper, trees, and gravel pile but we got it done. I said some prayers and very thankful we got the trailer moved without incident.

Now if Old Man Winter will cooperate tomorrow...
It took forever to get the storage trailer positioned last night. I kept having to get out of the truck to see how close the trailer was to the camper on one side and a tree on the other side. My wife helped with directions but for some reason, that's one thing we have difficulty doing effectively together. It is hard when my wife gives me directions backing a trailer or when she is driving and I give her directions.

There was also a pile of gravel in the way. I moved just enough of the gravel with the tractor to allow maneuvering the tructk After quite a bit of jockeying, I was able to get the trailer in a good position for unloading.

Earlier in the day yesterday, my wife and her father had already unloaded a bunch of stuff from the trailer and stored it in the garage. That was before I moved the trailer close to the garage so they had to carry everything about 100 feet to reach the garage. The picture of the garage shows the stuff my wife and FIL unloaded yesterday. So we were prepared to move in the house with the bare essentials regardless of the next day's weather.

When I got up this morning the ground was covered with snow. I got dressed and ate something then went to check out the road conditions. As I was cleaning the snow off my car, the snow started coming down heavily. As quickly as I would brush the snow off my windshield, more snow would cover it. After getting the windows clear enough to see through, I drove my little front wheel drive Chrysler to the street. The culdesac at the top of the street was quite slick.

I wanted to drive down the steep hill to see if I could drive back up the hill. However, I was nervous that if my car started sliding down the hill that I might not be able to stop it. So I backed the car down the hill. At one point the car started sliding and while hitting the brakes on the car kept accelerating down the hill. So while sliding backwards down the hill, I switched from reverse gear to forward and hit the gas and was able to stop. Going down backwards might have saved me from a mishap. After making it to the bottom of the hill, I drove back up the street slipping and sliding much of the way but was able to make it to the top. The conditions were quite treacherous and it looked like we would be getting more snow. The forecast called for cloudy skies, snow showers, and dropping temperatures as the day progressed.

My wife and I called all our helpers and told them the conditions were pretty bad and that they should each decide for themselves whether or not they were comfortable driving. We told them we didn't want them taking risks. I told my mom not to come at all. My brother and SIL arrived first and made it up the hill in his 4WD truck ok. Another helper was following my brother up the hill in his front wheel car and couldn't make it up the hill. My brother and I went and picked him up in my brother's truck. It snowed for about an hour then stopped and partly cloudy skies opened up. The roads got better and all our helpers except my mom arrived.

For the first couple hours our driveway was complete covered with snow but when the clouds let the sun through, the snow started melting even though the temperatures were dropping until they steadied at 20 degrees F by noon. We put cardboard down on the walkways in the house to try to mimimize messing up the floors.

So tonight I am sitting in my office in the house typing this post. We are officially in the house! Yay! We obviously still have lots to do. There are lots of unopened boxes. We carried all our clothes and enough kitchenware from the camper to be able live in the house. All our nice dishes are in boxes; we used cheaper stuff in the camper. My wife will be digging through the boxes to unpack the nicer kitchen stuff.

We still have 2 important things to finish before settling in is complete. Our dryer has a 3 connector plug but our house has a four connector plug. We also don't have a shower rod. We thought we might have one in storage but we didn't. Tomorrow we'll get these things from the big box store. In addition, I need to return the 28 foot storage trailer back in its spot beside the camper so we can park at the house and have a turn-around spot. Backing that beast into it's tight spot will be fun. At least it is empty now. The storage trailer and contents weighed 14,000 lbs.

Did I mention how nice it is to be sitting in our house?
