Today I picked up some scrap metal at a scrap metal business. Tomorrow I would like to practice making some weld beads outside in the gravel driveway. Trouble is, I'm not exactly what to put the scrap pieces on when I start welding them. The YouTube videos I see show these guys with these big metal tables, something I don't have. All I have is a couple wooden sawhorses. They don't seem ideal for welding.

You can always use your box blade as a make shift welding platform. Will keep you off the ground a little and is something you can clamp metal to

Yea don't weld on the saw horses, you will set them on fire, just from the heat alone, not even the slag.

The boxblade is a good idea, I have welded on a round of firewood before, note my first comment though, and keep water handy. I would use the boxblade. Or you can just set them on the ground and crouch over it, trying to not inhale the smoke.

I get enjoyment out of being selfreliant, and if I can buy the stuff and fix it myself, even if it means I have to teach myself a new skill I will do it. I have more time than money and am a fairly good hands on person and can teach myself about anything I need to do within reason.

But if I ever seem to get to Tn I will make sure I see if im going to be near, will send you a PM. We could meet for lunch or something, that way you don't have to feel weird about someone from the internet seeing your house or where you live. I am that way myself so don't feel bad if you do.

And the lesson here? Always ask on TBN before you do something.... I sure wish I had done that before I bought my trailer. Didn't know what I didn't know...

As for a welding table, what I use is the old ramps from my trailer on a pair of sawhorses. Yes, wood sawhorses... The old ramps I got with the trailer were bent and fatigued and scared the crap out of me once I figured it out, so I replaced them with some serious aluminum ramps that are fantastic. But I kept the old ramps and they became my makeshift table. It works for the space and needs I have right now. I'm always aware of not setting them on fire, but that isn't that hard to avoid if you are reasonably careful. I'm glad you were able to find a scrap yard that would sell to you. Scrap yards seem to be going away from letting the public in much these days. Just make sure you clean off rust before welding, and you need a grinder wheel or sanding disc for that, not a wire wheel.

I put the new belt and pulley arm spring on the mower. It now goes up a hill just fine! I suspect the mower would have been fixed without the new belt and spring. The big problem was that the pulley arm would not swing on the pin before I cleaned greased it.

Thanks for your suggestions! Now I don't have to go out and buy a $3500 mower - just yet.

Good fix- you SAVED $3,500.00 !!!
And though you might have gotten by without the belt and spring replacement, I doubt it would work as well or grip the pulley as well with the old belt/spring.
What's your total expense for this repair?
That mower, now properly cared for, will last you a lot more years.
AND, best of all you now have $3,500 to spend on the bundle of tools I outlined for your shop!
Oh, you don't have a shop yet?! Well now you can....
