At Home In The Woods

First a little background on me. I am a licensed General contractor that has done concrete larger and smaller than yours for close to 15 years. The halogen light on the floor when dark will make a super flat floor FF 50's, FL 50's look horrible. Concrete is one of those things that you only have one chance to get it right. Pouring a 3" cap is asking for problems. I have had customers request a super flat floor, I give them a price to laser screed the floor, and they go with the cheapest price hoping the guy can deliver. You get what you pay for! Like others have said, pick and choose your battles. It seems that this is a battle you started to pursue and have come to a resolution. That's good. I have never heard of a contractor removing a slab after a structure has been built on it. Even in commercial high dollar projects, they make it work. Can't stop the production schedule! I am sorry that this has happened, but I have nothing positive to say. Good luck with the rest of your project, it is coming along.

Reinstalling the Shower in the Rental House

If you recall, I had to replace the shower pan; the one in the shower when we bought the house was cracked. We were able to find a shower pan that was the same size as the shower sides. The shower is a cheap mobile home shower insert. I spent a lot of time fixing a really cheap shower. I would have preferred putting in a "real" shower but couldn't find one that would fit in this space. The materials for this job didn't cost much but the labor was expensive (mine).

I cleaned out the gutters on the rental house. The rental house has gutter guards. While the guards did keep most, but not all, of the leaves out of the gutters, the gutters still needed cleaning. One side effect of the gutter gards is they caused leaves to settle on the roof.

By the time I swept the leaves off of the roof, detached the leaves that were caught on the gutter guards, and removed the leaves and debris that made it into the gutters, it seemed to take more time to clean the gutters than if the gutters had no guards.

Here's the roof of the detached carport. These gutters do not have gutter guards. Notice that there are no leaves settling on the roof. Cleaning the gutters around the carport was much quicker than cleaning the gutters on the house that have gutter guards.

Depends on the type of gutter guards, wind, orientation, roof pitch, prior maintenance, climate change, and location of trees to the roofs in question.

Coyote,
Yes, gutter guards are a mixed bag. At the rental, the guards did keep most of the stuff out of the gutters even though the lot has lots of large trees. So the gutters did not clog even though lots of leaves fell on the house. So having the gutter guards bought some time before cleaning the leaves and debris of the roof and gutters. However, these guards did not prevent the need to maintain the gutters because they caused a "leaf" dam on the roof.

Obed,
Show pics of the leaf guards, I bet they're not the kind that actually work as intended.
Here's what I had on my CT property roofs.

Coyote,
Here are pictures of the one of the gutter guards on the rental house. They did a reasonably good job of keeping leaves out of the gutters. However, they tended to keep the leaves from sliding off the roof. The leaves would get caught on top of the gutter guards and then pile up on the roof.
