Hardwood Flooring Installation Begins!

I'm starting to get excited! The hardwood on the floor really changes the looks of the place. Now I'm paranoid that the workers will bring in wet red clay on their shoes and track it all over the hardwood flooring. My wife says I have to have something to worry about.

Looking Good. I really like the tile detail in the kitchen. I may look at doing something like that if I build a new house. You don't have too long to go now. Must be hard not to get to excited. How long before your cabinets come? When will the floors be finished?

Up here some put out a box of throw away boot covers for people to pull on. They are the tyvec type and cheap insurance. If someone is working inside and not going in and out some builders will ask them to bring indoor footwear.

I have seen many hardwood floors damaged because of a nail or stone in a boot. When I'm doing a kitchen we cover all the hardwood we will be on with cardboard or some type of protective covering.

Will your red clay stain the wood?

Floors are beautiful. We used cardboard over the floors but a lot of builders use rosin paper to cover floors or at least create a walkway for workers. Never can be to careful......some people just don't think.

Here's a close up. The design is called a "carpet tile". The grout between the tiles has not yet been installed. The grout will be a light color that doesn't stand out very much.

How long before your cabinets come?
About 3 weeks.

When will the floors be finished?
Close to the end. I think final painting may happen after the floors are finished. I believe the painter is supposed to cover the floors with plastic.

Will your red clay stain the wood?
I suspect yes. However, it may be possible that the sanding before finishing the floors would remove red clay stains but I'm not certain.

Obed,

The sanding will not remove red mud stains. Make it clear to all subs to either change shoes or provide them covers.

As far as the hardwood. My FIL is the project manager for a very large builder. He oversees about 200 houses ( $400,000 + houses) a year. He helped us with our house. He says that the hardwood should be finished after painting. Any paint that is splattered from rolling will sand off.

Obed, We went with a light colored grout on our kitchen tile as well and we are sorry we did. My son built his house at the same time we did and he went with a gray grout and I wish we had done the same...The grout is very porous even if you seal it...and sealing it is tedious and does not last that long...the light colored grout will get gray looking anyway..See if anyone else has had the same experience. My Mrs. fights to keep the grout clean..never ending battle and there is only the two of us, it is not like we have high traffic in and out of our kitchen..

We tried to match our grout to the grayish brown clay we have, it still turned a dirty gray.

Yep, disgusting isn't it...I wish the tile companies and installers would be honest and tell folks in the beginning..it sure would have been nice..

You can see the traffic patterns in it, another reason to keep grout lines as narrow as practical.
