I usually run out of shielding gas the same way I run out of wire - by surprise 
But that's why I have a backup CO2 bottle and stick/tig welders - because I know I get working and forget to check stuff :ashamed:
Usually when I run out, I instantly remember that the last time I said "gotta buy some wire next time I'm in town."

I just watch the CFMs. I notice the tank gauge, and when it gets low I just watch the flow gauge and when it starts falling from where I set it I replace. I run the #4 size cylinder from TSC and just weld for myself.
On gas, it's amazing how long they last once you get the leaks out of the hookup.
