ATF in place of UTF, for tractor?

ATF lacks the extreme pressure anti wear additive required for hypoid ring and pinion final drives. As for bargain oil from bargain sources. It's easy enough to custom print some pail labelled "top spec". Then fill the pail with recycled motor oil or ISO 46 hydraulic oil.
Pay me now or pay me later.
If you read the labels on Diesel engine oil. On occasion a gear oil spec such as GL-4 or GL-5 will be on the list.

That's the sort of things that you have to be careful of, as outlined in the article that I posted. Another reason to watch out in the case of 'bargin' products. As I think you are saying, it's better to pay a little more for a reliable brand.

Quite often some of the claims made on labels are quite impossible combinations. As I think you are saying, it's better to pay a little more for a reliable brand.

Fortec are you someone who reads widely, or a retired petroleum engineer or QC statistician or ? I'm trying to understand the basis of your conclusions.

On the one hand modern equipment deserves its manufacturer's recommended fluids. On the other hand, it seems like it would be pretty easy for modern blenders, ie Warren etc, to sell product as good as what 40 years ago manufacturers specified among the materials available then. To use in our 40 year old tractors. That don't seem to have had any lubricant-caused problems over 40 years use.

Fluids meeting minimum specs are used in a huge number of applications without lubricant-caused problems and the occasional case of lube-related failure in generic equipment (not modern high tech stuff) is really pretty rare. Obviously, this assumes the fluids are used within their manufacturers recommendations - temperature, change interval, protection against contamination, etc.

Has there ever been a problem with Warren's low cost products that are sold at TSC, Autozone, NAPA, other reputable retailers?

Read the article that I posted again. It addresses concerns regarding the quality of SOME products that are found in the market. This type of problem isn't just with tractor fluids, it's also an issue with engine oils, ATFs, etc. You can learn more by looking into the activities of PQIA (Petroleum Quality Institute of America) who attempt to uncover some of these dubious products and also publicise their findings.

I agree completely.

The cheapest 'flush oil' utf sold for 20$ a bbl today is likely better that what went in the machines when new. Keeping in mind multi vis oils weren't even around. so even if your cheap utf has bad viscosity numbers when cold.. the original 90wt gear oil probably did too!

Same for the engine oil. Generic multigrade engine oil with modern, even if minimum standards for today ) addatives should be LIGHT YEARS ahead of straight 20 30 or 40 used in these old machines.

Look at old atf types. A F, etc.

Hard to make a same category product today that wouldn't meet 60+ year old specs...

Is there a JD 303 UTF spec'd oil that can handle cold? The UTF I see only goes to 32°F.

If you used a heater it would not matter much i dont think. Just let the fluid warm up in the tractor before you work it reall hard but i do think there is synthetics that would be fine to way colder.
